Paperback Number of Pages: Thomas Nelson Publication Date: Life Wide Open Dr. Uprising is a wonderful picture of what a follower of Jesus looks like. Jan 03, Jesse Braswell rated it it was amazing Shelves: The love of God is a strange but wonderful truism in this world.
In order to understand it, we have to experience it fully. Then we can not help but to show it. It flows through us. Erwin does a great job of getting us to examine ourselves.
He causes me to look at things through new eyes. May 04, Ebookwormy1 rated it it was ok Shelves: McManus is a wierd and engaging bird.
Some good discussion in our group. But it didn't stick with me. Perhaps to profound, or maybe McManus is just in a creative zone beyond me, to make a practical, lasting, impact. Aug 07, Katherine rated it it was amazing Shelves: If you want to dig deeper on what's more about your faith in Jesus, read this. At the end I realized I was just about. God is indeed bigger than what big actually means! Mar 15, David Herrick rated it it was ok. I had a really really hard time getting into this book.
There was some good stuff sprinkled throughout, but as a whole it just never really connected with me for some reason. It's basically a book about having good character. Others might enjoy it, but I didn't like it that much. Aug 10, Jordan Barr added it. I love the break down of key Christian virtues. It truly gave me some insight into tough concepts. Don't just live, live to the fullest. Christianity is not dull and this book will help you figure out how to never let it be. Jun 17, Justin rated it it was ok Shelves: A few times I felt inspired or motivated, but either the author or I couldn't sustain it.
Maybe I'll return to it another time. Feb 10, Walt Walkowski rated it liked it. I took too long to read this book. I need to read it again. I found it to be very enlightening and convicting, but I do think he could've said the same things in a few less pages. Oct 07, Crystal rated it it was amazing. Good writing and plainly understood. One of my top 10 reads of all time. Apr 24, Maya rated it really liked it. This book articulates a lot of ideas about how to actually walk with Christ. A very solid book on character, backed in Christian faith. However, it often feels very secular- Take that as you will. Apr 07, Larry rated it really liked it. Nov 02, Christy Lee rated it it was amazing. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Perhaps I'm the only one who cares about this sort of thing, but the reading experience of the Kindle edition falls considerably short of the print edition. I will give the publisher some credit The text is rife with typographical errors, including missing apostrophes, incorrect punctuation, and spelling errors.
Additionally, some images in the book contain words which cannot be read on a standard e-ink Kindle these unreadable words also happen to be the theme of each chapter If you still read paper books and if you are apt to be bothered by the problems I mentioned , then I would recommend you purchase a print copy. The Kindle edition of this book was apparently an afterthought. The content of the book itself probably deserves 4 stars.
I've read about half of it, and it seems like a good book overall, though it does suffer at times from the epidemic of excessive wordiness so common to modern Christian non-fiction. Despite that, McManus regularly shares worthwhile and profound thoughts, so keep your highlighter within arms reach. This book is outstanding. McManus once again challenges readers to think about their own lives and how they are living.
Using what he calls, "The Character Matrix," he challenges us to go from self-focused slobs to servant-leaders. Each stream will force you to reflect on what kind of life you are living, and whether you are inwardly or outwardly focused. The key focus of Erwin's book revolves around the fact Jesus washed his disciples feet as he modeled servant-leadership to his followers. McManus argues this model still applies today. Too many books on leadership talk nothing of character, McManus turns this on its ear. His book is all about character and out of it you will be a better leader.
In having the privelege of seeing McManus practice what he preaches, this is a man who is a servant-leader.
Erwin pastors a church in Los Angeles called Mosaic, and serves his church well. I cannot give this book a higher recommendation than 5 stars, but it really is a Erwin McManus is a literary genius. He has changed my life, well Jesus has, but through Erwin. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. This, in connection with the video series, has not been as uplifting or inspiring as I had hoped. It is well-prepared, gives good direction to Bible study leaders but the videos as a whole just lack vision, spark.
I've read many books by this author. He uses real examples to connect with the reader on a personal level.
Always leaves me refreshed and energized. One person found this helpful. Again, another book of Erwin McManus put into written words what I have been learning in my own personal journey with Him, the Lover of my soul.
McManus does a great job dealing with what leadership is and what it should be. His insights are inspiring and challenging. A must read for anyone who is in a leadership position or inspires to be in one and wants to do it right! As a partner in and the President of a mid-sized company it's on the top of my list of books that have made a difference in my life. A refreshing Christian perspective on a critically important topic.
This book is dangerous! Can you imagine the things you could do, the impact you could have on the world, if you tapped into the dreams God has for your life? You were in God's imagination Warning: It is only for those who want something more out of life, who desire to tap into the divine potential that was placed in them at their creation.
