In our days of civil religion and the US as the world police, Rohr dares to tell Christians that Jesus intends for us to love, to make peace, to be humble, to be pure, and to be loyal to God first, with all other loyalties a distant second.
We are to be the moral standard and conscience of our society; to lead by example in giving, seeking, and finding-mostly to those in our society who have lost their way to fruitful and fulfilling living, whatever their socio-economic status. And when others threaten us with violence and hatred, we literally turn the other cheek, and the other, and the other, and the other-if it costs us our lives, we remain committed to God and Jesus' message of love, mercy, peace, and justice. Richard Rohr takes the reader along with Jesus and the disciples as they walk through ancient Palestine. Rohr shares insights into Jesus's radical awareness of the presence of a forgiving God helping the reader understand how consciousness centered in human desire differs radically from Jesus's consciousness centered in desire according to the desire of the Holy Spirit. Human desire is mimetic, it is desire that comes to a person from outside of herself.
That is, we envy what the other person wants. Envy unchecked inevitably leads to conflict that can turn lethal unless controlled. Typically human, mimetic conflict is controlled by so called 'good' conflict, which is just violence turned against a surrogate victim who is always the weakest among us. Rohr reminds the reader of Jesus's new commandment, which is grounded in human mimetic desire, but that redirects human desire from envying others to desiring what God desires.
Rohr's writing brings the reader to the immediate experience of walking along with Jesus. Reorienting one's desire from envy to God centered emulation takes a lot of walking with Jesus! This is something we share with the disciples, and I suspect with the author of the book as well! I've read a lot of Rohr's books, but somehow I've only now gotten around to this one. Immersing myself in it was like jumping into an icy mountain pond: It's a courageous book that dares to challenge "religious culture," that institutionalization of Christ's gospel that renders it meek and mild and safe, and to persuasively defend instead the original subversive character of Christ's life and teaching.
Jesus, according to Rohr, was much more of a threat to the social and moral status quo than he's usually reckoned to be. In challenging the cultures of money, power, and religionism, he offered a radically counter-cultural model of right relationship that he called "God's Kingdom. It subverts the established order by simply ignoring it and building the shell of the new within the old.
That's one of the reasons Jesus so favored the poor, the marginalized, and disenfranchised: Richard Rohr's reminder of God's great vision of justice, peace, and fulfillment, a vision preached and died for by Jesus, is a challenge to all of us who call ourselves Christians but have fallen into the habit of "loving Jesus" without acting accordingly. Highly recommended as a tonic to laypersons and clergy alike.
