Buroker makes it integral to both character and plot. Her characters are three-dimensional and real, but their flaws don't drive you away. Kali is smart and scrappy. Cedar is everything a good Alpha Male should be.
Too many romance, and non-romance, stories try to write Alpha Males and they just end up with Alpha Assholes. I'm in love with Cedar. I want one of my own! What else can I say? I have the first book in her other series on my ereader, but I'm terrified to read it lest it make me stop writing myself. This story is totally a 5. Oct 24, Megan Hicks rated it really liked it Shelves: Hunted was a fun follow up to Lindsey Buroker's first Flash Gold novella.
My review of her earlier effort sums up my feelings on the series, but I'll reiterate it here: I appreciated getting some of my questions from the first novella answered. Fun dialogue, interesting, likeable characters, and a quick moving plot all make Hunted well worth the money you'd spend on it and the hour or so it takes to read. A few things, however, could use some polishing. There were a few moments when the characters used obviously modern slang I'm thinking of Sebastian saying "sexed up" in particular that pulled me out of the story.
In a steampunk work, I don't expect exact historical accuracy, I expect an imitation of historical speech that readers can understand. There were a few other such moments, I think, but this example is particularly egregious and easily fixed, so I hope that modern slang is something that Buroker will be more aware of in her next effort. Also, I felt that at times, the action scenes were a bit drawn out, particularly towards the end.
As a reader who prefers less dialogue, more action, I'd like to see a bit more of a balance there. That said, I am looking forward to another Flash Gold novella! Sep 09, Kelly rated it it was amazing Shelves: I loved the first book in this series. When I saw that there was a second book starring the lovely, mechanically minded Kali and her mysterious partner Cedar I was all over it. I'm pleased to say that I wasn't disappointed in the least. Kali is still a mechanical whiz. Cedar is still mysterious.
Kali might like Cedar in more than just a business partner sense but she's pretty clueless when it comes to relationships and she doesn't know how to let him know this. Cedar begins to loosen th I loved the first book in this series. Cedar begins to loosen the chokehold he has on information about himself and let Kali get to know him.
And for anyone who knows a person who's scientifically or mechanically minded, Kali is spot on. Her curiosity nearly gets her in trouble more than once as she focuses on the gadgets she's seeing instead of her own physical safety. I love the characters, I love the understanding the two of them are slowly coming to, I love the steampunk gadgets.
Jul 24, Patricia Eddy rated it it was amazing.
My only problem with these little novelas is that I finish them too quickly. Another story of Kali and Cedar and this one was just as good as the first. We get to see more of Cedar's personality in this one, and how he and Kali interact. The action sequences in this book are very well written, and the mystery is short and sweet. I really enjoy the description of the inventions that Kali makes and her thinking behind them. Excellent detail, snappy dialog, and a very enjoyable read. Oct 26, Hali Sowle rated it it was amazing Shelves: Another fun romp from Lindsay Buroker.
Second novella in the Flash Gold Series finds Kali and Cedar are now partners in his bounty hunting business and while she's no longer in Moose Hollow she hasn't gone far and trouble has caught up with her again in the person of her ex Sebastian. If Sebastian wasn't enough there is someone else out to get her, someone who has a flair for the building of contraptions as well.
Good, well written story that was over too soon. Feb 05, Ricardo Moedano rated it it was amazing Shelves: The badinage between Cali and Cedar is like a fuel - it makes you finish this book fast. They're so freaking comical, even amid shootings and explosions, that you chortle and gasp over and over.
Lindsay keeps our adrelanile rushing as well as our spirits blithe once again. Jan 15, Jon Thysell rated it liked it Shelves: I liked the story, but not as much as the first one. Hunted felt a little wandering and with less direction, and I felt now was the time for a little more world building. Character development was fine, but also a little thinner than I'd like. In the last story, an bunch of people die outside of town, and so the pair leaves immediately, which makes sense.
Now, the same happens, but with survivors, some who'll probably hold a grudge, if not j I liked the story, but not as much as the first one. Now, the same happens, but with survivors, some who'll probably hold a grudge, if not just want the bounty, so why are Kali and Cedar staying?
May 27, Frank Bertino rated it it was amazing. Steamy Tinker I like the banter between Kali and Cedar. Particularly as they struggle with the feelings that they have for each other while attempting to avoid possible rejection. Circumstances do drive them closer to each other as the story progresses. Sebastian, her ex, shows up to involve her in a scheme that will be detrimental to her health while Cedar stands stronger as her protector. Aug 07, Kris rated it really liked it Shelves: Foor a novella the action is nearly non stop and transitions smoothly from one peril to another, while still taking time to do some character development. The budding romance between the characters feels natural and unforced.

Nov 11, Matt rated it really liked it. The story just worked for me with plenty of action and the witty banter of the main character. Now Ms Buroker has released a second novella in the series, continuing the adventures of the two main characters as they try to wrap up some storylines that were hanging after the first story. Let us just say that the story is up to par with the first. This story continues right where we left off with the two main characters now working together on various enterprises and alkali still working on her dream, an actual flying airship. Gangsters are after her because they want the Flash Gold and we learn that the law is after Cedar, so we have many options for action here.
Again with this chapter in the story, Ms Buroker provides us with excellent characterizations and wonderful character chatter. The witty banter between the two main characters provides the reader with depth of character and a genuine interest in their tale. There is a moment in the book that sizes this up perfectly.
Cedar and Kali, who are undeniably in love with each other come face to face with a man who was in a bad relationship with Kali. Cedar immediately says "Want me to kill him? As with all her works, character interaction is great and characters are fully developed. The exchanges between Kali and cedar are hilarious as they dance around being attracted to each other without saying it outright.
If I had one gripe to give, it was that this was actually too short and provided almost no forward movement for Kali or Cedar. Their relationship moved forward, and some might argue that is not necessarily a good thing if you like that sort of Moonlighting long running love dance thing, but the mystery of the Flash Gold, the sidebar tale of running from gangsters or running from the law did not progress at all.
That said, I would still recommend this as the sorry was good, filled with action and mystery, and the characters are fully developed and interesting. Jul 21, Hannah rated it really liked it Shelves: Hunted is a huge improvement on Flash Gold - while I liked the first installment, the story, pace and, most importantly, the banter and bonds between the main characters really picked up by a mile in the sequel.
No sophomore curse here, that's for sure. The character development for Kali and Cedar is probably the aspect most responsible for my increased enjoyment of the sequel - I feel like our leads have eased into their new partnership or perhaps the author eased into the writing of these char Hunted is a huge improvement on Flash Gold - while I liked the first installment, the story, pace and, most importantly, the banter and bonds between the main characters really picked up by a mile in the sequel.
The character development for Kali and Cedar is probably the aspect most responsible for my increased enjoyment of the sequel - I feel like our leads have eased into their new partnership or perhaps the author eased into the writing of these characters, since this is one of Lindsay Buroker's earlier works , because all of a sudden I have a better grasp on what makes them tick and what they might do moving forward. This is particularly the case for Cedar - I noted in my review of the first novella that Cedar was very much a mystery and I thought we were in for another dark hero whose secrets are closely kept and worried somewhat that he might turn into Sicarius, which is not the type of inter-series similarity that I'd like to see from an author whose work I adore.
I'm glad I was wrong.
Dark and brooding is all well and good, but sometimes I like the prosaic just for a change - characters who wait until they establish a firm foundation of trust with others before revealing personal information. Yay for intelligent behaviour! This is precisely the case with Kali and Cedar, who have a complicated and exciting for the reader mixture of friendship, business partnership and romance developing. They make a great pair and share some hilarious exchanges; Cedar's not too strong and silent to forget his sense of humour, and Kali's learning to loosen her hold on the protective walls she'd built around herself.
Also pleased to see that my wish for more smoke nuts came true, along with a wide array of other mechanical inventions by Kali to liven up the adventure and aid our intrepid heroes on their quest. And that's the real charm of the Flash Gold series - fast, fun and enjoyable.
Dec 10, Douglas Bittinger rated it really liked it. In this story Ms. Buroker continues the adventure begun in Flash Gold with Kali and Cedar, bow business partners as bounty hunters. The story is tightly written with lots of action, witty banter between our protagonists, as well as a few of the antagonists, and is well edited. The romantic angle steps up a notch, but is still within the comfort zone of those who do not enjoy romance novels. Much more is revealed about both Kali and Cedar: Even the mysterious mechanical genius antagonist steps out of the mists for an introduction.
And we get another dose of the wonderful machinery for which steampunk stories are known. My only reservation about this story is that it wanders a good distance into the realm of fantasy. For me — and this IS a personal preference — any time magic overshadows the mechanics and science I begin to lose interest. Most readers will find this a very enjoyable book. I will continue heading her in these other works. Nov 25, Jenna rated it it was amazing. Once again, Miss Buroker produces an entertaining tale of adventure and danger in her sequel to 'Flash Gold'.
Kali has managed to set up another shop with her new partner, Cedar, and things seem relatively calm for them until Kali's old beau shows up with a business proposition and Cedar gets wind of his long-time nemesis being in town. Of course, mayhem and chaos ensue and the two of them soon become caught up in a deadly situation. I think one of my favorite aspects of this series is how the c Once again, Miss Buroker produces an entertaining tale of adventure and danger in her sequel to 'Flash Gold'.
I think one of my favorite aspects of this series is how the characters find their way out of tight situations: I was also happy with the further development of Kali and Cedar's relationship in this book, as well as their growth as individuals. The reader is shown a brief glimpse into their pasts and we finally get to learn Cedar's real name. Also, the arrival of a new threat, an old business partner of Kali's father and her own intriguig inventions, helps set up a new challenge for Kali and Cedar they'll have to face in hopefully future books.
In conclusion, the character development, once again, is up to my strict standards; the action is, if not constantly present, always looming in the background waiting to thwart our heroes; we get another fun invention or two from Kali I especially like the spud gun at the end ; and the reader is introduced to another formidable enemy who may or may not have survived the battle at the end of the book.
A very entertaining read indeed! My only question is: Aug 16, Scott rated it it was amazing. This is another fantastic steampunk book by an author that has mastered the genre. Hunted continues the story of Kali McAlister and Cedar. Kali dreams of getting enough money to build an airship that will allow her to escape the frozen tundra of the Yukon. She possessed some of her father's alchemical masterpiece flash gold.
A magical substance used to power some of her creations it had properties making it unique and extremely valuable. When Sebastian, her ex, shows up in her life again to try to sweet talk her into working for him a whole new set of problems appears. One of the major reasons that I pick up every book that Lindsay writes are her characters. They way they interact with real personality and humor makes all of her books fantastic reads.
This book reveals a bit more of the past of both Cedar and Kali as well as explores their relationship a little more in depth. The mechanical creations used both by and against Kali in the novel show a great level of creativity and it can really keep a reader on their toes never knowing what they can expect.
Although Hunted, like Flash Gold, is a novella rather than a full-length novel, it's full of action, character development and atmosphere. Steam-punk meets fantasy, in the middle of the Alaska Gold Rush! There were some uses of modern terms that felt out of place, but not so much that I was pulled out of the storyline. In a steampunk work, I don't expect exact historical accuracy, I expect an imitation of historical speech that readers can understand. If you have not read Flash Gold or the Emperor's Edge series go pick up the first book in the series and you will be hooked. Aug 15, Cathy Keaton rated it it was amazing Shelves: She does it again—Lindsay does some more awesome! Kali wants to get out of town in a self-made airship, which she hasn't been able to build yet, and Cedar wants to kill the man he's been tracking since the first story. But, Kali's lovely former fiance strolls into town and shakes things up a bit. It's fun to finally meet Sebastian, the jerk t She does it again—Lindsay does some more awesome! It's fun to finally meet Sebastian, the jerk that broke Kali's heart, and see how idiotic this guy is, especially when he meets Cedar.
Sebastian becomes the reason the plot progresses, as Cedar wants to use him as bait to get closer to his target. Unfortunately, Kali has to go along for this journey, and that pans out poorly for her. But, another enemy is targeting Kali as they travel to Sebastian's claim, so they spend a good amount of time running for their lives. Kali and Cedar really get to know each other better in this story, and get to explore the possibility of a budding romance.
I won't say too much about that since it should be experienced by the reader. By the end, there is still much potential for them to get together.
But, will either of them accomplish their individual goals? Will they have to separate someday, as a result? These stories could go on forever and they'd always make some progress.
