And when that complete stranger fucks her over? T I have done something I swore never to do, which was, after the first 4 chapters, I skipped to the end of the book. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I have no patience for such painful, tedious writing, and the modern heroine is completely insipid.
Anyone with a brain knew Sebastian was a scoundrel. It was so obvious, I skimmed ahead and saw I was right, but that reveal isn't for another couple hundred pages. I have to interest to watch Emilie get suckered by him. It's a shame; the setting and concept are interesting. Too bad a better writer didn't write it. This title showed up in my search, and with the high Goodreads rating, I gave it a try.

I was not familiar with the author, and had I delved deeper or viewed her sappy book covers I would have realized her propensity towards summer beach romance novels. Predictable plot, half-witted heroine and a manuscript desperate for an editor.
Hmmm I read more than half of it and finally gave up , not even interested to find out what happens to the Emilie girl. Too bad a better writer didn't write it. She can't play along with the German officers?? The past London Open Preview See a Problem?
Es war einfach so vorhersehbar und schlicht… ausgelutscht. Eine Weiterempfehlung gibt es aber definitiv keine! I got this this ARC at a book club event, because the locations and times of the story sounded interesting. But I could tell from the very start that Sebastian was up to no good, and I really didn't like how Emelie just gave herself over to him, financial decisions and all.
It was patently obvious he was a gold-digger. I got about 60 pages in right after the proposal , but my suspicions were too stong, so I skimmed ahead to the latter part of the book and my suspicions were confirmed. I suppose the middle part, taking place during WWII might have been interesting, but I just cannot I invest time into a book with such poor plotting and characters.
Life is too short to read bad books! Once again, I was expecting a book that explored a woman's struggle for independence and identity within a traditional, patriarchal social structure, for that is what the description promised, but once again, our protagonist was reduced to a one-dimensional character in a romance story. Authors seem to tease the reader with potential for interesting characters only to fall back on tedious, predictable plots and gendered tropes. Main character is completely snowed by a stranger and ends up marrying him.
Ending is entirely too neat and convenient. Frankly-- she doesn't deserve the good ending. The people that work for her do. The beginning wastes way too much time with her worrying about money and the debts left by her dead one-note-character mother. But then, midway in, she's suddenly and conveniently wealthy. There are a lot of inconsistencies. Beginning has too much telling for me. Introduction poetry was good, though. Historien fra krigens dager er super. Mar 08, Joanna M. Hated this book and couldn't work up the enthusiasm to finish it.
Could not get into this at all. The description sounded very appealing, but I was bored stiff by the end of chapter one. Not my thing at all, unfortunately.

Research for our books is nearly as much fun. We flew in a historic biplane, watched work in a butcher's shop or got pampered by a beautician. For our novel "Die schwarze Taube von Siwa" we travelled to Egypt and explored this fascinating land. This bestseller will be translated by Amazon Crossing for the anglophone market.
We love to write historic novels. Only our novel "Die Honigprinzessin" takes place in present time Berlin. In our spare time we read and watch films and tv series Downton Abbey. Julia loves to do yoga and Horst is running regularly. He also is a very good cook. Are You an Author?
