Some concepts you kind of already have a good grasp on just through thinking through and discussing through different ideas in the movie. However, this book helps solidify them a little bit more. Excellent book and I highly recommend it.
Nevertheless, I was impressed with the author's commitment in attempting to present all applicable ideas in this book. Although, the discussions were compressed and details on the philosophical texts were kept to a minimum, you can't fault the author, fully knowing how extensive the realm of philosophy is.
You might as well buy a real philosophy book, if you feel that this one had been presented in a half-baked manner. It was nice for the author to also insert some noteworthy quotes that were applicable to the discussion and which had set the tone for the texts.
Any matrix fan doesn't have to feel insecure about buying this book, just because owning this gives the impression that you didn't understand the films at all. In fact, this book expands and adds to the understanding of the films' themes. For any true Matrix fan, this book will drown you with all the philosophical ideas that can be inferred from the films, so much so that it's as if these were being spoon-fed to the reader.
Like a Splinter in Your Mind leads readers through themyriad of philosophical themes within the Matrix trilogy, helpingthem to gain a better understanding of the . It should be noted, however, that the author is not steering any reader to a certain set of beliefs. He presents all sides, all aspects, and all relevant theories and it is up to the reader to choose what he believes as the "acceptable truth". What prompted me to finish this was the realization that the author had given most if not all scenes in the movies relevance and meaning, while most critics and "haters" of the Matrix Universe would claim that certain scenes were unnecessary, pretentious and overtly smug about the philosophical depth involved in the script. Furthermore, if this is not tantamount to lobbying, I would suggest people to make a Google search on "Matrix 4" or "super matrix movie".
If a new trilogy would be done, I'm sure all holes to the plot would be plugged properly.
What a fun read! This book presents a thorough analysis of the entire Matrix saga, including the Animatrix and Enter the Matrix video game. Rather than approaching the films from one philosophical view, many contrasting opinions are presented, leaving the reader to make up his or her own mind.
I've watched the films countless times, and this book still made me look at the Matrix in a way I never had before. Still, this book manages to provoke a chuckle here and there, rather than taking itself too seriously. And that's the great thing about this book. It's far from dull, nothing like a textbook. And when I read it, I could tell that Matt Lawrence is a genuine fan of the series, not just a professor looking to cash in on the Wachowskis' success.
I could feel his excitement for the subject matter, which added to my excitement.
One of the highlights of this book is its character list and glossary, both of which are very informative. I knew these films were loaded with symbolism, but these passages opened my eyes to some intriguing, subtle details that, otherwise, would have gone unnoticed. If you're a Matrix buff, this is definitely the book to get.
However, it may be a little dense for casual fans or those who wish to simply understand the plot elements. This book can only show you the door.
