One of the best poems Filled with poems from the 13th century, some about fate, some about death, some about life and some about love A little bit of everything, like jumping into a time machine only to find out the same things that concern man today were the same things concerning them then.

O Fortune, like the moon you are changeable, ever waxing and waning; hateful life first oppresses and then soothes as fancy takes it; poverty and power it melts them like ice. See all 5 reviews.

Being familiar with Orff's choral work of the same name, I picked up the book when I saw the title and cracked it open to read: Money being testified makes a mockery of the law: Judges so adore it they'll move mountains for it; causes with it pleading find themselves succeeding Laws are only made for those by whom they're paid for: So I bought the book.
Also, reading this made me extremely pessimistic about the near future of our own society; if these issues can't be solved in years, I doubt we'll solve it by the next election. Oct 08, Robert Seitz added it.
The translation was good, the availability of linear translations online was a consideration. This book is small press and the translations are produced by a poet's own affinity. This naughty book of rhymes hidden in the stacks by monks reveal that human nature has changed little even as our way of life has changed a great deal. Jul 19, Mark rated it really liked it. I like literature for the middle ages and what impresses me is the basic commonality of thought - spanning the centuries. Carmina Burana is of course verse, and for that reason it may not appeal to all. In this case what I like in particular is the robust irreverence, especially applied to the morality of church people.
Reminds me a bit of Decameron, although that is quite a different style with very sophisticated wit. Sep 16, 3ppman rated it really liked it. Joyous, humoristic, mischievous and diving into everyday life to portray its strongest, not deepest impressions, Carmina Burana is a true classic and an important mirror of the world as it used to be in Middle Age. In all its simplicity and melody it shows what poetry truely is - a man, simply walking on his way and singing along with the world.
