In A History of Horror , Mark Gatiss remarked that Hammer's earlier films were taken seriously at the time, in comparison to the trademark camp appeal of their later works. The film indulges the turn toward self-parody suggested by the title, with some humour appearing in the script, undercutting any sense of horror. A dispute with the Association of Cinematograph Technicians blocked this proposal, and instead the company purchased the freehold of Down Place. Many of these involved classic horror characters such as Baron Frankenstein , Count Dracula , and The Mummy , which Hammer re-introduced to audiences by filming them in vivid colour for the first time. I'm really more of a Frankenstein and Werewolf guy than I am Vampires. But this is a pretty good tome for anyone interested with the subject. A female vampire, Carmilla changes her name throughout the films, presumably to avoid detection. The three films that make up the Karnstein trilogy were made within twelve months of each other, and have met with mixed views from audiences and critics alike. Next up was Lust for a Vampire — an enjoyably trashy outing that featured the unforgettable Yutte Stensgaard. And, finally, my favourite, Twins of Evil starring the lovely Collinson Twins — an underrated gem of a film.

All three films were scripted by Tudor Gates co-screenwriter of cult favourite Barbarella , and had music by Harry Robinson, whose eerie, screeching strings were a highlight of each.
