Feb 13, Deidre rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: What a great book to read in the winter! I understood her overwhelming desire to grow citrus in her house. I tried it ten or so years ago, a lemon and an orange. Wow, they smelled so great in bloom. Actually got a tiny orange. But just couldn't keep the part of my house the plants were in warm enough that winter. Well, it felt like it to me and those c What a great book to read in the winter!

Well, it felt like it to me and those citrus just gave up. Now I think she got me thinking about it again Just wished there had been a few pictures. There was some 4 star information content here, especially at the beginning, but I don't think that it was linked well to the memoir content.

And sometimes it just felt like it was just a bunch of info dumps, connected loosely or not at all.

That said, I thought there was a lot of interesting and useful practical info, and I liked the bits about the history of conservatories, and finding out why the room in my local conservatory that has the butterflies in season is called the stove room.

Apr 18, Jan Edmonds rated it really liked it. Well, this lovely little book speaks to a couple of my favorite interests, gardening and botanical history. Can't you imagine the warmth, relief and palpable hug of such a place on a cold winter day? And so it begins, Ruth's writing took me to meet some of the most brilliant minds in the country growing absurdly fabulous plants.

The author sneaks in a dose of mindfulness about dealing with loss, nothing heavy handed, in fact rather uplifting. It's the same feeling I get meeting a new bloom. She is "living my dream". I've often thought that adding a conservatory to my house is the solution to the living though the Northeast winter. She made the dream real after the untimely death of her sister followed by her own breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Jun 05, Emma rated it liked it Shelves: An interesting window into the history of horticulture across the globe, Paradise Under Glass is written with smart reflection and complex histories in mind. However, as a lover of biographies, I was disappointed by the over-inclusion of historical notes. I wanted to learn about Kassinger's life and struggles as a neophyte in the gardening world. There is too little of her in the book which left her personal story feeling as more of an aside and the what-were-supposed-to-be-tangents of horticult An interesting window into the history of horticulture across the globe, Paradise Under Glass is written with smart reflection and complex histories in mind.

There is too little of her in the book which left her personal story feeling as more of an aside and the what-were-supposed-to-be-tangents of horticultural history the dominant focus of the book. May 19, Martha rated it liked it. Part memoir, part history of gardening and greenhouses, part tutorial in nearly all things botanical, and part DIY manual, this book meanders at times.

You need to read faithfully from beginning to end to reap the rewards of the last chapter about vertical wall gardens. Although it could have been tighter, this book is well-lived, well-researched and well-written by an author who is passionate about her home conservatory. Feb 01, Sheila Garry rated it liked it.

Interesting book about conservatories. Made me want to go out and buy even more house plants. I found myself skimreading the historical facts, of which there were many.

I feel that this should either have been a book about her experience creating a conservatory, or a book about historical conservatories. May 02, Holly rated it it was amazing Shelves: Part memoir, part history. I liked both halves of the whole a lot!

The memoir sections included vivid descriptions of plants and the people who love them, as well as real emotions about the transience of life. The history sections were compelling and quick. I am a huge indoor plant lover and if you are too, pick this one up! Dec 26, Samantha rated it really liked it. I devoured this book.

Usually non-fiction takes me longer but the author has a lovely style and mixed in interesting histories both personal and non-personal that made it quite difficult to put the book down. It probably helped that it is December and I'm ready to plant! It definitely inspired me to go water my abused Christmas Cactus - and even repot!

Nov 02, William rated it it was amazing. In response to loss and adversity in her life, the author builds a conservatory onto her suburban home. Intertwines her own story with interesting sections on the history of glasshouses, plant hunters, modern growers like Glasshouse Works and Logee's, and other subjects.
