This is a good update on Kibbutz economics most have been privatized , on the young Israelis' views on joining the military, on the personalities that make up the the populace and, of course, living with the threat of war.

See a Problem?

Drawing upon his own experiences reporting on the wars in Bosnia and Sarajevo, Martin Fletcher has written a searing love story and a painfully authentic account of a war reporter chasing down the scoop of a lifetime. May 18, Alice rated it really liked it. There is no sugar-coating nor is there demonizing. Although controversial, this Old Testament commentary reveals the true history of ancient Israel. With best regards and wishes, — A.

Physically it was not so easy for the author to walk the shoreline and he is fortunate to know so many people that could give him insight, even if after the fact. The book, of course, is an easy read, since Martin Fletcher is no stranger to concise writing and getting to the point quickly. Although it made the reading more interesting, I'm not so sure I wanted to know that Martin stole what he thought was an artifact he learned later that it wasn't and that he gave his phone number to a recently divorced woman he met on his journey for a purpose that may be innocent but probably not when he gave it to her.

Still, if you would like to gain a little more insight into Israeli thought both Arab and Jewish this book is an informative read. One person found this helpful. Walking Israel is written by a universally, highly respected journalist in international television news.

It is a fascinating story from a man whom Anderson Cooper says sets: But as he embarks on his personal quest to walk the entire coast, he soon discovered that there was much more going on under the surface than he ever imagined. As Fletcher explores this ancient land in his own inimitable fashion, the people and culture of contemporary Israel comes alive. Martin Fletcher tries to break out of his daily news bubble he's a fulltime journalist by taking a long end-to-end north-to-south walk along Israel's coast.

He writes of the various people he meets, the places he visits and of the real and serious issues that these people and places conjure up. This is not the view of Israel one gets from the tourist or Jewish oriented media nor is it the daily news cycle stream of hard news. There is no sugar-coating nor is there demonizing.

Martin tries to get at the gestalt the "soul" of Israel. This well written book can be a worthwhile read for all sorts of people.

Martin Fletcher -Walking Israel

One that comes to mind is someone who is familiar with Israel but has mostly only seen it from the tourist or visiting student perspectives. This book takes you places literally and otherwise that you might not ever get to otherwise. For instance he relates first hand experiences with seriously polluted places and the ongoing serious pollution of various bodies of water as well as the air - something that most tourists and students in Israel are wholly unaware of.

He also explores various and serious social issues. One does not need to have visited Israel to appreciate this book. Readers of all backgrounds should find it worthwhile.

He has been the face of NBC news for 30 plus years as a reporter in hot spot areas of the Middle East. Who better to write a novel on "what Israel is really like".? You will enjoy the journey he takes you on! It's a history ride and a personal reflection on the author's life too! This book is very unique in the insight it offers. His encounters with an Arab Christian tour guide, an Arab war hero who served in the Israeli Army, a Jewish beach bum and a British woman bring a richness to the discussion about Israeli society and Israel's future.

But as someone who travels to Israel often, I get a bit of a quiver to think its not shown for what it truly is If you already know Israel, or think you know Israel, you do not need to read this book. I have been to Israel several times and enjoyed this book. The book gives you interviews with people whom Martin Fletcher meets in his walk along the coast.

Having heard groups of Israeli's expound and pound their points of view to each other and to their audience, one needs to hear and to watch these people relate to each other--now, that is an experience. The Israeli's whom we have met are articulate, super-verbal, extremely opinionated. I wonder about the stroke and heart-attack rate in Israel, as the people are so impassioned. The references to sex are not needed in this book--not at all and actually distract from the overall point of the book.

I would say that the sex scenes are gratuitous. The book reads very well-the author is a journalist. I did feel that he wrote the book to sell it, to make money, not really to offer the reader any new insights. I cannot put this book down. It is a balanced report, I think, while opening your eyes to history. See all 43 reviews. See all customer images. Most recent customer reviews. Georg must try to stop the murder, all the while navigating a city that wants to "eject the aliens. In The List, Fletcher investigates an ignored and painful chapter in London's history. The novel is both a breathless thriller of postwar sabotage and a heartrending and historically accurate portrait of an almost forgotten era.

In this sensitive, deeply touching, and impossible-to-forget story, Martin Fletcher explores the themes of hope, prejudice, loss and love that make up the lives of all refugees everywhere.
