You find out why in a city you are more likely to eat gourmet food, be pick-pocketed, or meet your ideal mate. You also make counter-intuitive discoveries: I greatly admire Edward Glaeser. He revived the field of urban economics, almost single-handedly. He has investigated every aspect of city life.

He masters theory, statistics, and history. He is not ideological. All his qualities transpire here. Yet The book reads easily. The economics and statistics are clearly explained. As a non-ideologue, Glaeser heaps both scorn and praise on both markets and governments. Want to make house affordable? Do not look down on suburbia: But you need governments to take care of public health, congestion and global warning.

Glaeser endorses water utilities, congestion taxes and some infrastructure. He lambasts the mortgage-interest deduction, most building restrictions including for Conservancy and Preservation and most efforts at urban renewal, like conference centers. On the eternal struggle over the merits of centralized versus decentralized government he takes a middle ground: I appreciated such nuanced views This is the best pop-econ book I have read. This book is a hymn to the civic value and importance of city life For it is Glaeser's contention that it is city life, where smart people gather to live and work, that is the mother of invention, productivity and entrepreneurship and that these three factors, above all, are the sine qua non of great cities and great civic life.

Yes, successful cities need other basic things like clean water, good schools, alert and aggressive policing, an abundance of good housing options, safe and attractive public places, and a pro business, pro development public sector, but it is the gathering together in close proximity of large numbers of bright, entrepreneurial people that is the ultimate life-source of great urban living Ultimately, for Glaeser, it is great wealth that makes for great cities.

New York, Boston and Houston are - each for partially different reasons - the exemplar cities of his thesis. LA,though he doesn't say it, would seem to be the anti-city of his thesis. She dramatically reconstructs the story as it unfolded using private papers, depositions, trial transcripts, and court records. This riveting narrative traces the contributing factors and the dramatic events in Phenix City. In the process the author shows how citizens' vigilance and exercise of the ballot can prevent similar suspensions of human rights and civil liberties from being repeated.

It's not as easy a read as Murder in Coweta County but still a good actual account of how America has had its pockets of crime over the years. This one account is chilling and you can hardly believe this sort of thing is ever allowed. I'm sure we've not seen the last of true accounts like this one but if you want an account that's easy to understand, this is a good one.

Great book with factual information of the history of Sin City. This book had some Alabama history that I didn't know. I bet it isn't taught in the schools. As for it being the most corrupt city in the country, I don't know.

I would think that title would go to Hot Springs AK. That is just my opinion. That aside it is a very good book. Try and see the movie based on the book, it is interesting also. Loved the book, especially since I lived in Russell County as a very young child in the 60's. She really does a great job of telling the story. I watched the movie about Phenix City and it was told more from the Patterson family point of view. I bought a second copy for my uncle that reads a lot and knew some people from Phenix City back during the bad times.

I fully recommend this book. One person found this helpful. It showed that caucasions suffered at the hands of other caucasions just as afro-americans did. When they ran the bad actors out of Phenix City, some of them came to our area and were absorbed by the above group, so after reading " Wicked City" by Ace Atkins which is a fictionalized account of the Phenix City story, decided to read this book which is non-fiction.
