They appear more like the red cross bringing humanitarian help than Christians bringing the Gospel. The opposite side is those Christians who are hardly involved in any humanitarian aid, but only preach the Gospel. Stott's book is very helpful for all Christians to see that meeting people's physical needs and their spiritual needs can be done together without one negating the other.

Stott divides his book into five sections. In the first section begins to help the reader see how evangelism and social action relate to one another. I believe many shun social action I struggle greatly here because we don't want to get our hands dirty. Stott rightly diagnoses this when he states, "It comes more natural to us to shout the gospel at people from a distance than to involve ourselves deeply in their lives, to think ourselves into their culture and their problems, and to feel with them in their pains.

Yet this implication of our Lord's example is inescapable. Stott goes on to say that, "neither social action or evangelism is a means to the other, or even a manifestation of the other. For each is an end in itself.

Both are expressions of unfeigned love. One does not necessarily have to lead to the other. Both social action and evangelism are expressions of love, and both should be present in the believer's life. Stott is also helpful in his chapter on Conversion. Many people today have a misunderstanding of conversion and Stott is very clear on what conversion actually is. Stott examines how regenaration, faith and repentance are part of our conversion.

Stott also briefly speaks on the fact that conversion does not take us out of the world, but rather sends "him back into it, the same person in the same world, and yet a new person with new convictions and new standards. Stott encourages the reader to be actively involved with the lost world throughout this short book. Christian Mission in the Modern World is a timeless treasure and was a great blessing to me.
