First English octavo edition of Marshall's magisterial biography of Washington. Finely bound in three quarters morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, frontispiece portrait, 2 folding plates, 10 folding maps, engraved vignette at end of volume III, a printed slip announcing volume V tipped-in at front of volume IV and another tipped-in at front of volume V.

A very nice presentation. Second Edition, Early Issue. Thick octavo, , 42, viii, , 32, v, 10 maps; VG; bound in contemporary full brown leather, flat compartmentalized spine, gilt lettering and rules; gilt roll to board edges; repair to front hinge; bumping to corners, mild shelfwear; interior clean; some gatherings have more bleeding than others, causing a variance of color in the text block; Atlas with engraved vignette title, all 10 folding maps present and in excellent condition; lacking engraved frontispiece portrait of Washington in volume one, tissue-guard present; JG consignment; shelved case 1.

Marshall greatly admired George Washington, and between and published his influential five-volume biography. Marshall's Life of Washington was based on records and papers provided to him by the late president's family. The first volume was reissued in separately as A History of the American Colonies.

The work reflected Marshall's Federalist principles. His revised and condensed two-volume Life of Washington was published in Historians have often praised its accuracy and well-reasoned judgments, while noting his frequent paraphrases of published sources such as William Gordon's history of the Revolution and the British Annual Register.

The purpose of biography is to read about the life of a person. After reading the first volume, which dealt mainly with the causes which lead to the revolutionary war, I came to the second volume hoping that I would come to the subject that caused me to download these volumes in the first place. This was not the case. I am currently stalled early in the second volume ,in which, George Washington again has made only a cursory appearance.

John Marshall's literary style is extremely dry. There is occasionally a gem, that provokes one to serious thought. I had to read this for school so its a lot of history. Overall it wasn't too bad of a book. Feedback If you need help or have a question for Customer Service, contact us.
