The Word of Faith that We Proclaim, Part 2

This is one reason why the early church never gave up the Old Testament, even though Christ has come and fulfills all the Old Testament hopes. Let me try to explain this microcosm — this theater — a bit more fully in five steps. Paul says in Romans 2: Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin. So not only do we have a form of the law written on our heats that Israel had in writing, but we and they both fail to keep it. It is written down in history. The law written on our heart is not visible, and so our disobedience and rebellion is just as serious, but is not so clear.

Israel is the visible theater where you can see in history what is really going on in you. And when we see Israel judged under the hand of God in history, we are seeing a drama of our own situation before God. When their mouths are stopped, ours are stopped. Listen to Romans 3: Is he not the God of Gentiles also?

Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one. He will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. In other words, the way of salvation from law-breaking and condemnation is "justification by faith, apart from works," and that means the way is open for all nations, Israel and all the rest. And since justification is by faith alone, therefore salvation from worldwide universal guilt and condemnation is open to Israel and all other nations. So we have seen four ways that Israel is the historical theater of the drama of our own lives before God:.

Disability Is No Accident

Their history was pointing to Jesus, and our spiritual struggles were pointing to Jesus. Fifth, Paul describes why Israel missed the remedy, faith in Jesus Christ, so that we will not make the same mistake, and so that they can find their way back. Now this is where we are in Romans I have begun this way so that you can see why this text matters for you.

What Paul is doing here is explaining for us why Israel missed the point of her own law. His aim for us is that we would not miss the point of that law or the law written on our hearts. Are you reading your story and not seeing the point? Do you know what your conscience and your failures and your guilt feelings are all about? We should pause and ponder the wonder of this for a moment.

God Almighty, Creator of the universe, Ruler of all things, has intervened in history for the last 4, years to deal with a people called Israel — why? He deals with the microcosm for the sake of the macrocosm. He deals with one finite people for the sake of all peoples. He deals in visible history for the sake of invisible souls and minds and hearts that are depressed with guilt and condemnation. Is this not a marvel that the history of Israel — told in the Bible — is about you!

He already made the point in Romans Israel failed to see that her law, her history, was meant to lead her to Christ for righteousness by faith, not by works. Now in verses Paul illustrates this failure from the Old Testament. We should watch and be sure that we do not make the same mistake in using the law of Israel or the law in our own hearts. What Paul says here is that the Old Testament taught that two kinds of righteousness: In other words, Paul says that Moses laid down the principle that perfect obedience to the law would obtain eternal life from God. If we would trust him and by his grace never sin, we would be saved and have everlasting life.

Both Paul Romans 3: Righteousness by perfect faith and no sin would make one perfectly suited for eternal life.

The Church assembly would first have the Liturgy of the Word with readings and then a homily or sermon. This was followed by giving thanks in the Liturgy of the Eucharist: For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word On the day we call the day of the sun, all who dwell in the city or country gather in the same place.

The memoirs of the apostles and the writings of the prophets are read. When the reader has finished, he who presides over those gathered admonishes and challenges them to imitate these beautiful things. Then we all rise together and offer prayers for ourselves. When the prayers are concluded we exchange the kiss.

Then someone brings bread and a cup of water and wine mixed together to him who presides over the brethren. He takes them and offers praise and glory to the Father of the universe, through the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and for a considerable time he gives thanks in Greek: When he who presides has given thanks and the people have responded 'Amen', those whom we call deacons give to those present the 'eucharisted' bread, wine and water and take them to those who are absent.

Jesus teaches us to pray - "All that you ask for in prayer, believe that you will receive it and it shall be yours" Mark The Lord's Prayer Matthew 6: The Sacrament of Baptism followed the instruction of Jesus to his disciples to "teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Matthew In accordance with this, the person about to be baptized was asked three questions: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his Son our Lord? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church? On the way to martyrdom to Rome, St. Ignatius of Antioch wrote in his Letter to the Ephesians He was born and baptized, that by His passion He might purify the water.

Having first said all these things, baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit in living water. The word "Creed" comes from the Latin word Credo , which means "I believe. They are also known as symbols of faith.

The Creed, or rule of faith , was also an important guide to presbyters as well in interpretation of Scripture. The three-part profession of faith resembling our present form of the Apostles' Creed was recorded by early Church Fathers such as Irenaeus of Lyons, Cyprian of Carthage, and Tertullian of Carthage, and was evident by the third century AD.

The Apostles' Creed is presented here in 12 lines, representing 12 Articles of Faith for the Christian. I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. From thence He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. There were eight named writers of the New Testament: The Church Fathers were important to the early Church, for they were the ones who had an important role in the process of the formation of the canon of the New Testament, as well as the interpretation of Scripture.

Their objective was to choose those written books which were truly inspired by the Holy Spirit and best reflected the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, as understood within the Tradition of the Church. The canon of the New Testament is exactly the same for all of Christianity!

There are 27 Books in the New Testament: They proclaimed this revelation found its fulfillment in the life and teaching, and above all, in the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, source of forgiveness and of everlasting life. They frequently drew upon the Old Testament writings, primarily to confirm Jesus Christ as the Messiah, or to serve as a source for moral instruction, or for the interpretation of events.

Typology in Biblical studies finds an Old Testament story serving as a prefigurement or symbol for an event in the New Testament.

Referring to Christ, Paul called Adam "a type of the one who is to come" Romans 5: In reading Scripture one looks beyond the Literal sense , the genuine meaning, and searches for the "spirit in the letter," the Spiritual sense of Scripture. Paul to the Corinthians 3: Paul to Timothy 3: Thus the Word of God was written within the Church, the Body of Christ, flowing from the authority and teachings of Jesus Christ and the oral traditions and writings of the Apostles in the early Christian community.
