The character names have been altered from their real-life counterparts, but much of the stories reflect the reality of running a barn: She entered that theater shortly after befriending a barn owner, named Marilyn in the book, and asking if she could do chores in exchange for boarding and help to buy a horse. Here, Perez talks about her start in the world of horses and why so many people are drawn to barn life.

I enjoy going up there tremendously. I started writing it years ago, right after [Marilyn] passed away. Everything just came together for me. Sometimes they were just about barn cats, or a foal confronting a turkey for the first time. Their personalities are just so rich. I thought "This is just great stuff. The world you have no clue about. It has dawned on me over the years how that barn attracts all kinds of people.

But the ones who have always surprised me are the mothers. They come to the barn with their kids because they want their kids to experience it, but they are the ones who fall in love with it. Sometimes the most unlikely people will just love to come. I had one woman who came with her kids and she was wearing scarves and bangles and [dressed in anything except barn clothes]. She fell in love with the smell and the horses and pretty soon she was doing chores.

One summer we had a movie crew who wanted to use the farm as a location for a movie they were doing. Saratoga treated us like we were very special and made us feel very welcome. I just wanted to relate to you what a fabulous time all of our hundreds of members had.

The members come from all over New York State and were deeply impressed with the friendliness, quality and sheer exuberance of your City. Many of us plan to come back as visitors on our own, Again, thank you for making our stay so pleasant. The DSDI attendees certainly expressed their gratitude to me for hosting this magnificent event, and I continued to make sure they went away with an appreciation of the great cooperation I encountered by every person I worked with in setting up this event.

Thanks again for all your help to date.
