Jesus taught his own community some better questions to ask, thus correcting erroneous cultural views about Truth and life priorities. We need to read the scriptures to correct our questions, not to assume it has an encyclopedic obligations to answer ours. It helps very much in using any source to see what the perspective of that source is.
It helps to see whether the questions we are interested in are actually of interest or import in the Scriptures. If we find them different, that is instructive.
The scriptures are not obliged to answer questions that arise out of our personal ideas and concepts, however momentous they may seem to us and to our current secular-religious syncretism of western culture. It is not about abstract, speculative questions. The scriptures themselves continually attest to their life-context orientation.
The Hebrew and Christian Scriptures did not arise in the context of modern western rationalism and its reductionistic approach to information as knowledge and Truth. The Hebrew Scriptures, rather, arise out of a communal, relational cultural setting. The biblical documents deal with Covenant relationship obligations, and the integrity of the community and the individual in community, under any such covenant.
These communal covenant obligations that define the Torah and the supporting scriptures are a very hard context for modern westerners to understand. English Focus Garlow does the most violence to the scriptures by making his reference point the popular English-language terms of western culture his reference.
He vaguely mentions that the originally pagan word and concept "hell" is used indiscriminately to translate 5 different and mostly metaphorical Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek terms. But then he proceeds to ignore the different meanings and metaphors of hte original terms in Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek. He interprets all those terms and proposes his afterlife scenarios on the basis of the concepts entailed by the English words in focus.
The scriptures and his readers deserve better. Thus Garlow, perhaps unknowingly, makes the error other modern writers and secular analysts make.
Editorial Reviews. From Publishers Weekly. Religious or not, most people have contemplated Encountering Heaven and the Afterlife: True Stories From People Who Have Glimpsed the World Beyond - Kindle edition by James L. Garlow. bahana-line.com: Encountering Heaven and the Afterlife: True Stories from People Who Have Glimpsed the World Beyond (Audible Audio Edition): James L. Garlow .
He co-opts the original meanings and usages to his modern popular-culture understandings. This well-intentioned pastor does a great disservice to his parishioners and readers by encouraging their inherited popular cultural concepts melded with an abstract materialist concept of Truth as individual facts. This subtle syncretism is an ever-present infection stirring in modern western-culture evangelicalism, stalking our social landscape seeking to snare innocent enquirers. Covenant Relationships I don't see in this book a serious consideration of Covenant relationship, the core biblical concept.
Beyond that, the approaches almost totally ignore the cultural meanings of the key words and the concepts they might have represented in the multi-cultural Roman context of first-century Mediterranean life and worldviews. It is unfortunate that this skilled writer and pastor does not allow his framing of the themes and the questions he poses to be adjusted to the format and agenda of the scriptures themselves.
I did find some useful and interesting reflections here. These questions are dealt with competently and thoroughly, but the reader needs to be aware he is answering them as a pastor to provide comfort and reduce concern or anxiety, but not as a really reflective investigation of scriptural perspectives or a reflective theological frame of reference.
May 23, Ron W. After reading so many near-death experience NDE books over a period of years, I thought this book by J.
Wall was a little different because it approaches the topic from both an investigative and scriptural perspective. So many books seem to want to package and sell the notion of life after death. It's quite an interesting read and well worth the time. I am so thankful to have stumbled across this book.
Nothing in there about praying for angels to come rescue you. The book also provides some accounts of those who have dabbled with the occult only to wind up with an evil demon living in their house. I consider it a "MUST" read for anyone who has any questions, doubts or fear about death and their loved ones. Eye opening Can't wait to see heaven and my Lord Jesus Christ and the Father it sounds like such a wonderful place to spend eternity. Oct 30, Brendan rated it liked it.
I give 3 stars for the format but it's good. Mar 08, Kathleen Kat Smith rated it it was amazing Shelves: Oh I would never know how much this book would mean to me or how much of a comfort it is to anyone who has experienced loss whether it's someone we love or even a pet we hold dear to our hearts. This book provides the hope we need to know that we will see our loved ones again in heaven as long as they are a believer in Jesus Christ.
It's also an amazing book to use to show you what heaven is like, what happens when we die, what is hell like, what are the roles of angels and demons in this life an Oh I would never know how much this book would mean to me or how much of a comfort it is to anyone who has experienced loss whether it's someone we love or even a pet we hold dear to our hearts.
It's also an amazing book to use to show you what heaven is like, what happens when we die, what is hell like, what are the roles of angels and demons in this life and just what near death experiences can show us from those that have been to the other side and have come back. It also details various stories of those people on their last moments who have had the opportunity to share what they see just moments before they pass over to the other side.
This book provides a wide variety of stories such as angels watching over us during our day to day lives, rescues from angels when we are at risk, glimpses of heaven from those who have crossed over to the other side when they technically have died only to be sent back.
There are loved ones waiting for us, pets that have passed on before us and the most beautiful descriptions of heaven, the houses that are there for us believers as well as the peace, music and love that fills them the moment they step across. The best part is that Jesus is waiting for us on the other side where there will be no more tears, sorrow or pain and the best part is, we will never be separated from those that we love ever again.
This book also takes the reader into the dark side of death and provides some detailed accounts of just what hell is like and how dramatically it changed the lives of those that were able to come back and make sure they didn't wind up there permanently. The book also provides some accounts of those who have dabbled with the occult only to wind up with an evil demon living in their house.
It also tells you about ghosts and how we should not be seeking to communicate with anyone or anything that have passed on. To do so is tempting fate with evil.
I received this book as a free Kindle eBook and the opinions expressed are merely my own. Garlow and Keith Hall is a must have for anyone. It gives us all hope that this is not the end when we die. There are many many stories including one of the authors own personal account that will definitely make you a believer. I personally recommend this book to anyone going through the grieving process or who have experienced a loss. This one rates a perfect 5 out of 5 stars in my opinion.
This book also uses the Bible as a guide to define what will happen to us all and as a basis for what stories are based on what the Bible teaches us about death, angels, demons, heaven and hell! Apr 18, Chad Miles rated it did not like it. I really like to read books that push me deeper into my faith in Christ and the goodness of God. That's really not what I got from this at all. The book always left me feeling that heaven was a really weird place and was never accurately described by anyone that had been there. The accounts in Sid Roth's book are far more descriptive and each account is backed up by a commentary and a summary of the person.
The more I read this book the more I started feeling like something was wrong. If you go I really like to read books that push me deeper into my faith in Christ and the goodness of God. If you go to heaven it should be more than just feeling a great sense of peace.
Angels are also made to be something that we should specifically pray for. As Jesus said "Seek First the kingdom and all these things shall be added to you". Nothing in there about praying for angels to come rescue you. Any way, I digress. Mar 10, Kate rated it liked it Recommends it for: Atheists and those questioning their faith.
While Garlow's book is interesting and an easy read, it had a lack of details in several of the stories. So far, I know that Heaven is beautiful, has a lot of houses in fields, tons of flowers, and everything seems to glow with a radiant light. I was hoping for more in-depth stories that exposed more of what Heaven was like, as in what people do all day. I was continuously left with the question, "What else? Strangely enough, no two people seem to have the exact same experience. It's hard NOT to believe when confronted with such a large amount of matching information. All in all, a quick read and interesting.
Jul 25, M added it Shelves: This book is a review of paranormal and after death experiences researched by two Christian ministers. The content itself is not exceptional or unique, but it reveals a very interesting point: These experiences are not different then found in any other books written about the very same subject matter. And this begs the question: It seems to me that researchers from all This book is a review of paranormal and after death experiences researched by two Christian ministers.
It seems to me that researchers from all perspectives and schools of thought are beginning to come to the same conclusion; that there is something beyond death and alternate parallel dimensions are interacting with our own. Nov 09, Marci rated it really liked it. Instead of just one person's account of what they saw when they died, this is a collection of Near Death Experiences. The stories are told without any extra preaching or excessive verbage about their life before and after. Nice to compare what each person saw. Also, a few negative experiences, not everyone gets a glimpse of paradise: Mar 28, Kendall Evans rated it really liked it.
This is definitely a thought-provoking book. Seeing Heaven through the eyes of so many different people is really powerful reading. The authors did a wonderful job choosing the stories, and the entire book was a quick read because each tale made me want to keep reading. Not necessarily a book I would re-read but definitely one I would pass on to someone else. Jul 24, L. I just finished reading Encountering Heaven and the Afterlife. Thank you, James L. Garlow and Keith Wall, for writing this amazing book and for all of the effort you put into compiling so many personal accounts and checking for credibility.
I found the stories very comforting after losing my daughter a year and a half ago. Annie writing as LL Curtis Website: Nov 11, Kitty rated it really liked it. I loved the stories about heaven. I didn't like reading the ones about hell. They were a little disturbing, but I guess they needed to be told.
