Try searching for the place name plus library, or take a look at your local government website, which will probably have a section on library services. The only thing to watch out for is that ISBNs change if there is a different edition of the book. Look up the book as you normally would on Amazon, searching on Books to cut down the results. And consider buying new if you expect to keep the book. Most importantly, the web is a good source for basic facts — information that you frequently need to deal with homework or a project.

This is the stuff you would traditionally go to an encyclopedia, a dictionary, or a similar reference book for. Try a source outside your own country as well as a familiar one to get a broader viewpoint. You can put a lot across with a good picture. Sometimes it makes your text easier to understand. Sometimes it just makes the presentation look more attractive. Put in a search term in the usual way and you will get a collection of thumbnail pictures to choose from. Some of the pictures that have been found will be no bigger than the little thumbnail you see.

Others may be much more detailed and larger. Most of the image searches will give you the choice of seeing all pictures or just small, medium, or large, making it easier to pick out what you want. Take a look at the search result before making a choice. It will show the size of the image in pixels the individual little colored blocks that make up the image and in bytes. By modern standards this is an acceptable but smallish photograph. Going for safe search will give you a better match to your requirement.

Moving pictures Although you are relatively unlikely to want to include movies in an assignment, it is possible you may be able to submit some work electronically, and movies can be a very impressive supplement to a presentation you give to your class.

If using movies this way, remember to keep the moving image simple and short. Alternatively, Google is building a video archive at video. A map can be a great way to illustrate an event, to describe a journey or simply to let your audience know where a place is. Watch the way the TV news puts a location across. If they want to describe an event in Minsk, for instance, they will show a map of the world with the country Belarus highlighted, then zoom in to show the location of Minsk itself.

The web can provide you with just as many types of map as you can imagine, but broadly they fall into three categories: Indicator maps are most likely to turn up in a general web search. The chances are that someone else has already wanted to for instance show where Belarus is in the world, so you can make use of their attempt.

You should not make copies and put them on a website or publish them in any way. Get some input from the right real person and your assignment is going to have unique content that no one else can match.

Health warning First, a word of warning. Not everyone out there on the net is a nice person. There are people on the internet who will lie to you about who and what they are, and may attempt to get to know you better for unpleasant reasons. Follow some simple rules to stay safe: If in any doubt, ask your teacher or tutor. It might be, for instance, that you want to know something about their products, or their industry. It might be that they specialize in a particular subject that you want to know more about. I left the double blips off that last search as the company is unlikely to be called Basic Publisher, but the word will be somewhere on the page. Once you have reached the company website, take a look around.

In many cases you will be able to answer your question directly from the site. Look out for a public relations link — PR people are often enthusiastic to provide information about the company. Alternatively, look for an appropriate named person for instance, Real people 71 someone in IT if your question is about their use of computers. If all else fails, use a general info company. With a small company, feel free to contact the CEO or director, managing director, chief executive, president. Most such people are very enthusiastic about what their companies do, and they may well be the best contacts to deal with.

Look for PR contacts instead. Lots of websites provide forums or message boards where people can share opinions and discuss a topic. You may find useful information already posted on the board this way, or you might like to take the next step and join a forum to be able to post a question. If you decide you want to ask a question of the members, take a little care. Remember, a forum is like a community. The good news here is that message boards and newsgroups often attract enthusiasts who know all there is to know about a particular topic. But you can certainly hope for some excellent leads to then research yourself.
