Das Christentum: Was man wirklich wissen muss (German Edition)

Most translations are prepared with scholars representing both traditions. The main difference between Catholic and Protestant translations now is the inclusion or exclusion of certain Old Testatment books that the Protestant churches rejected at the time of the reformation. Typically, new translations are offered in both Catholic and Protestant editions i. It is the approach towards inclusive language that most characterizes the different translations.

Some translations use "vertical inclusivitiy," in which lanaguage referring to God is "de-sexed. Beyond this issue, some translations have a reputation for being "clunky.

The translators of this edition also rejected many traditional phrases used in older translations, which breaks the link with many traditional phrases and quotations that have found their way into English. For that reason, I would probably advise against this particular translation, even if you are Catholic. Some translations are designed to be easy to read, but are really paraphrases and not true translations, e. In the interim, here is a website that attempts to list the main choices.

This Wikipedia entry also seems to be quite comprehensive but a little long: Comment King James is much older language, early 17th century, which is almost the same period as Shakespeare. It's useful for familiar quotations, like proverbs or sayings, or for often-recited passages, like the st psalm or the Christmas story.

It's not very useful just for reading and understanding the text. If you like relatively traditional style but want to understand the text in modern language, you might like the Revised Standard Version RSV , which is the version that many adult American Protestants grew up with.

Scroll down the page for the word search function, and use the pull-down menu if you want the regular version rather than the anglicized BE spelling. Unfortunately, that website doesn't have a text search. A good choice for comparing German and English is DieBibel.

Both are well worth the investment. Another version you might be interested in comparing is the New Jerusalem Bible.

This website is not very well sourced but appears to offer the text online, book by book, not searchable. It's a decent modern translation, and it's not simplified language. Its drawbacks are that it's somewhat conservative, and it's already 30 or 40 years old, so it doesn't reflect recent scholarship, much less current usage on questions such as inclusive language. You should avoid most of the other translations at Bible Gateway; most are very literal and very conservative.

Comment The King James Version has given rise to phrases which are omnipresent in modern English, so much so, in fact, that many or most people don't realize they're biblical. Marcel Weber rated it really liked it Oct 30, Dear user, We put a lot of love and effort into our project. That, too, is entirely possible. Another problem that is not often mentioned in the context of biblical translation, but deserves at least a footnote, is that some of the books of the New Testament were written by non-native speakers.

The most common simplified-language versions are the Good News Bible a translation, but a loose one and the Living Bible a paraphrase, not a translation. The former is better if you have to choose one, but if you can read English fairly well, you shouldn't need either. New King James would be very low on my list. I see no reason to read it when you can read either the original King James or any of half a dozen better modern translations. We've had this entire discussion before, so I would also suggest looking in the archive Suche in allen Foren.

Comment Ich hab's gefunden: Bible translations hm--us I tried before I started this thread. Comment Ich weiss nicht ob das schon erwaehnt wurde, aber du kannst auch einfach mal auf bibleserver. The one in the other thread may have been better, with dates. And I see on the way to bed I made a mistake in this one -- ECanon does have a text search, so it's worth bookmarking after all. But anyway, if it's useful to anyone, good.

Comment Evening, hm--us Have you heard about the latest bible translation project in Germany? Here is a link: It's certainly not an allround-bible, but a very fascinating project indeed. Comment Interesting, thanks for the link. I realize the whole thing about gendered language is much trickier in German, harder to achieve a solution that's both fair and aesthetically acceptable. Even in English, I can't always accept texts that are so rigidly inclusive that they become difficult to read.

But it's definitely a positive step to have other options available, if only to make us question the masculine words in our minds when we read the traditional text.

Doch wohl eher Paulus.

Comment I agree with anna; yotix's claims are wildly inaccurate and entirely unsupported, obviously based only on a mishmash of hearsay.
