This is an odd hole in an otherwise exhaustive record of American religious voices. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The kindle edition I received does not work at all.
It won't let me access the table of contents and every time I try to access a page manually it closes and redirects me back to my library. Very disappointing, especially since I was not able to return it for a refund. One person found this helpful. Class was cancelled however this book is a good read.
Getting through both of these volumes took me awhile, but I finally finished them. There's not a whole lot to be said in terms of a review.
The title basically says it all. It's a compilation of primary source document citations since It picks up right where the last volume left off and is updated every several years, apparently. There are excellent introductions to the chapters and the selections on suggested reading material are incredibly thorough.

I'm not sure if I'd buy this new or not, but a used copy is only a few bucks and definitely worth the price. The updated third edition of Gaustad and Noll's "Documentary History" is even more reader-friendly. Truly "a treasure chest containing varied essentials of our country's past" "Religious Studies Review". Readers can expect to find four essential sections accompanying every reading.
First, the editors provide an introductory overview of each time period, placing the readings in historical context. Second, they share a brief, enticing narrative introducing the author and the context for his or her writing.
Third, they provide the writing itself, along with bibliographic documentation. Fourth, they conclude each section with an extensive annotated bibliography. For historical researchers like myself, wanting to do primary research, this section alone is "worth the price of the book. As already noted, Gaustad and Noll provide materials on every imaginable "religious group" within American history.
Their selection and presentation demonstrates an unbiased commitment to fairly represent all traditions. To this breadth of coverage they add depth of selection-their readings are not mere paragraphs torn out of context.
Rather, they are extended readings with enough material to gain a true picture of American religion-first hand, first person. One might wish for more documents concerning the American Hispanic religious experience one or two documents discuss American Hispanic Catholicism.
