These delightful stories about a Victorian gentleman thief were written by the brother-in-law of Arthur Conan Doyle. Clearly meant to be an "answer" to Sherlock Homes, they feature a clever main character, A. Raffles, who steals jewelry from the rich and outwits the police at every turn. They are narrated by Raffles' charmingly innocent partner in crime, Bunny Manders. Hornung was a contemporary and a friend of Conan Doyle, a fact I discovered that actually prompted me to try the Raffles adventures. I got the Kindle version and kept looking at the 'percent read' meter, lamenting the coming end of the stories.

403 Forbidden

This is the other side of victorian skullduggery compared to Sherlock and ACD. I found the writing eloquent and intelligent. Bunny and Raffles are a marvellous 'bromance' - in the days when English men could walk down the Strand arm in arm, and refer to 'intimate' male companions without worrying about sexual sneers! The sketching of semi-aristocratic life of those times, too, is a great backdrop. I was very sorry when the book ended.

Good not great Sherlock Holmes vibe to it but it wasn't as in depth as I expected. These stories are great fun, and they give the reader a huge dolop of the life and language of late 19th-century English society. I did need to read up about cricket, and I'll admit that watching the Bollywood classic "Lagan" helped me pick up on some of the cricket craze, even if it was second-hand.
