Overall i think this is an average book. You can tell it was written by several people, because the first part is very boring, then towards the middle the author put a lot of personal opinion and experience, then it ends very boring. Its like 3 different people wrote the book, each with a different viewpoint.
The subject matter is too boring and many things arent covered in enough depth. For example, on page it's talking about DSP resources, then in the last paragraph all of a sudden talks about meet-me conferences. The first time i read the book i missed this, as i understand dsp resources well. The part about meet-me conferences should have been a seperate section. I also dont like that meet-me conferences are sometimes referred to in the book as meetme conferences. If youre studying and you search the PDF on meet-me, you will miss a lot of stuff.
They should have used terms more consistant, but again if several people wrote the book its understandable you would have differences like that. My recommendation is to read this twice - first time overview, second time in detail with the questions at end of each chapter. Focus on technologies such as meet-me conferences. The test is very hard take extra time studying.
Implementing Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Part 1 (CIPT1), is a Manager, Part 1 (CIPT1) (Authorized Self-Study Guide). This is Cisco's authorized, self-paced, foundation learning tool for the Manager, Part 1 (CIPT1) Foundation Learning Guide: (CCNP Voice.
I spent almost 2 months in total and passed. I have been working in the telecommunications engineering field for almost ten years now. This book does a great job at introducing you to CUCM 8 features but fails miserably at making it interesting.
I love the voice realm but this book will put you to sleep due to it's excessive wordiness. On top of this issue, some of the statements are wrong which is strange since both author's have extensive experience in the field.
Sorry but three years doesn't make you an expert in the field. One example is in the very first chapter when it talks about the licensing manager. Specifically, this manager runs on every sub and pub in the cluster but when it comes to the end of the chapter review, you have to pick between the two. Now technically, you can just use the subscriber for the licensing manager but again, technically this isn't right and will confuse the reader.
These kinds of things are littered throughout the book and can make studying for the CIPT1 cert irritating since you don't know which is right, the original text, the summary, or the review question. As always, a lab, CBT Nuggets, and at least one other source is recommended anyways for cisco certifications. I purchased this to help prepare for the Cisco certification exam.
I work with CUCM on a daily basis, so the book was primarily to focus on the "Cisco answers" and test preparation. The book did help I passed. I have two complaints about the book. The first complaint is with the editing, it is horrible. Even after registering the book and getting the errata, the mistakes, both typo's and technical, are all over the book.
