Dog Stories: Dogs I Have Known, Dogs I have Met and Other Dog Stories

Feb 16, Ginny rated it it was amazing. If you love dogs, you will love this book!!! What a sweet idea for a book! Normally not a fan of short stories, but each one is a real-life account of how one dog changed someone's life. Great for any dog lover! As a mom to four fur babies The stories were heartfelt. Great book for anyone who has ever loved a dog. There is a bit of a christian theme which is OK for me, just might turn off some folks. I was sad to come to the end of the book. Many of these short stories have a heartwarming message and show loving dogs. Some stories tell of how their dogs were courageous or helped them in physical or mental ways. I have personally never been a big short story fan myself, I mean you don't really get to learn a character from just pages.

I feel that in this book you can get to know every dog very well, from their The Dog Next Door The dog next door is a collection of short stories about everyone's favorite, and the best animal, dogs. I feel that in this book you can get to know every dog very well, from their name to their personality. But may of these stories made me almost shed a tear. There are dogs helping children with massive mental issues, or dogs who love their owner unconditionally.

This book truly tells the magic of mans best friend. I feel that there is an overarching theme that is in all these stories, which is how loving and caring dogs are. Every story is different, there are stories of three legged guard dogs, some stories are transformations of dogs from the pound and how there lives were changed by the dog.

Every dog has a story, it's our job to learn about their stories. Mar 15, Joanne rated it liked it Shelves: This was a collection of short stories about peoples relationships with their canine companions. Most had a religious mention, which is fine, if that is how you feel.

I just didn't really pick up on the warmth that I was expecting to read about. Then, again, I am not a true "dog person" and have always owned cats. Wonderful collection of writers for this volume. Just didn't really make me want to go acquire a dog, like I really thought the book might have done. Sep 22, Elizabeth Quigley rated it it was amazing.

I identified with the love, companionship, and especially the Loss we feel when we let ourselves love Jess Drew, Jill Beneda. A delightful collection of short stories that pulled on my heartstrings. As an animal lover myself, I can SEE these people and their stories and their animals. Each story is beautiful in its own way. Some of them are just simple stories - a dog helped someone find their voice or bring them comfort. Others are miraculous - a dog helps with a medical disorder of some sort or saves a life.

Some are sad - the dogs die; some are happy - abused and neglected dogs get I love the stories about the dogs, and I absolutely love the raw emotion coming from each of these writers. Some are sad - the dogs die; some are happy - abused and neglected dogs get a new lease on life. I love that there are several small stories.

There's no time to get bored, but plenty of time to get hooked. And I really liked the little random bits thrown in. They're not part of the stories, but it's nice to read random facts about dogs.

Happy Tail Stories!

Some I knew, some I didn't. I wasn't, however, ready for the sheer amount of blatant Christianity in the book. A mention here or there at first didn't prepare me for the more blatant mentions later on. That doesn't detract from the book, necessarily. I just wasn't aware it would be there. I've got no feelings about religion one way or the next, just didn't realize it would be there.

The description of the book doesn't exactly say there will be references in it, although it also makes it clear there is a religion connection. A collection of canine-centric stories with a bit of Christianity thrown in, this book made for an enjoyable read before going to sleep.

The stories were in general light, and not too long, with a positive message, so I could read a couple and then go to bed feeling uplifted. The authors didn't get overly preachy, citing a Bible verse here and there or thanking God for bringing the dog in the story to them at the perfect moment in their lives, which is the kind of Christian book that I enjoy.

One A collection of canine-centric stories with a bit of Christianity thrown in, this book made for an enjoyable read before going to sleep. One fault I did find with the book was the repetitiveness in that some authors had many stories in the collection, on in particular being a woman who owned afghan hounds where it felt like I had just finished an afghan hound story when another one came up.

In reading the author bios at the end, some of the names were familiar from other Christian-themed books I've read and most mentioned other spiritual works the writers had published. I felt that if they would have expanded the author pool outside of what I sensed to be a specific circle who contribute to similar books by this publishing group, there would have been a greater variety of stories and less a need for multiple pieces by the same writer, and I'm sure there are plenty of Christian writers out there who have dog stories, if they wanted to maintain that focus when expanding the writer pool.

This collection of stories by various authors about dogs they have known and loved is a wonderful feel-good collection to curl up with on a cold night, or for a short bedtime chapter, or just about any time. Some of the dogs, or their people, appear several times, and others we only meet once. Some train as search and rescue dogs, and some save their families' This collection of stories by various authors about dogs they have known and loved is a wonderful feel-good collection to curl up with on a cold night, or for a short bedtime chapter, or just about any time.

Some train as search and rescue dogs, and some save their families' lives, but a remarkable recurring theme, which is already familiar to many dog people, is that even those dogs rescued from pathetic circumstances do as much to heal their person's soul as their person does for them. The most dramatic inspire a total change of career, but all of them, in ways large and small, transform their families' lives and teach us how to love.

Kept it in the car to read during those times I had to wait a few minutes here or there. It was a fun book to read in doctor's waiting rooms, etc. Short stories like the "Chicken Soup" series. Often a conversation starter when people noticed the picture on the cover. Enjoyed the stories as well as the fellowship with other dog lovers it invited. Want to donate it to my vet's waiting room but am not ready to give it up yet because I loved it so much. Yesterday a biker story, today a book about dogs. Can my reading get any better? Anyway, this book is stories written by dog owners about their beloved critters.

Maybe only a dog lover like me could appreciate these stories. These are mostly touching accounts of how these people found their dogs, how they bonded with them and stories of their lives together. Each one is special. If you love dogs and appreciate them as friends like me, you will enjoy this read. If you are a dog lover, then you will like this book - a collection stories from current and previous dog owners and the impact that these fine creatures have had on their lives. Each chapter is a unique story, making the book one that can easily be finished or can be set aside and to be read a story or two at a time.

Each story will make you remember your own dog or the dog of a friend or neighbor. It also may make you want to go acquire dog. I don't know that pit bulls are inherently more awesome than other dogs, but I DO know that they're not inherently worse.

The title and the engaging cover photo lured me in, and it indeed proved a wonderful book. It debunks the myths, hype, lies, and hysteria about Pit Bulls and other Pit Bull-like dog breeds that the media and an ignorant public have circulating for a few decades now, with tragic results.

I know any number of people who ought to read this book, but I'm sure they are so bound to their stupidity on the issue of "dangerous dog breeds" that it's made I came across this book by accident in the library. My Dog Story

I hope this book gets the exposure it deserves and helps rehabilitate the image of a much-maligned breed. Mar 04, Mikki rated it really liked it. A wonderful book about my favorite breed of dog. We bought this book for my mother-in-law for Christmas because she's terrified of pit bull-type dogs, and after reading it, she now understands that pits are just dogs, like any other dog.

I can't wait to introduce her to the pittie my husband and I adopt--her first pit bull grandchild! She will love that dog, I just know it! Nov 11, Debra Daniels-zeller rated it really liked it Shelves: If you want to learn more about pit bulls, this book has a lot of great, heartwarming stories. From Michael Vick's rehabilitated dogs to Helen Keller's pit bull, I learned a lot about how many people have had these dogs and how this breed has been demonized in recent decades. Therapy dogs, police dogs and frisbee champions--these stories are sweet and compelling.

Dec 11, Melissa D rated it it was amazing Shelves: Ken Foster's text and the collection of gorgeous photos makes this one of my favorite dog-themed books ever. Foster could turn any skeptic into an embracer of this truly misunderstood, smart, sweet, loyal breed. I was fortunate enough to see him speak on his tour for this book, and was so moved and entertained by his stories, many of which are captured here.

And just look at that face on the cover.

I don't know about you, but I'm in love! Apr 12, Joshua Hyland rated it it was amazing. I really liked how this book high-lighted the fact that the Bull breed of dogs are really just dogs, they have the same attributes as other dogs. My favorite stat from the book, had to the use of Pits as gaurd dogs, they're terrible at this by the way, and Pits are often stolen from the lots they are supposed to be gaurding. Nov 01, Heather Powderly rated it it was amazing. I'm most likely biased because of my love for pit bulls and Ken Foster, but this book is incredibly well done.

It did not take a defensive stand in regard to pit bull myths, but made a good case for itself. It also highlighted many positive stories involving pits, many of which I hadn't heard before. I was very impressed. Everyone should read this beautiful book loaded with wonderful pictures. People who love pitties will love the book. People unsure about them will understand. People against them will learn. Mar 08, Abby Menard rated it really liked it.

I'm a Good Dog by Ken Foster is about the breed pit bulls and it talks about the different bad views on pit bulls and why most of them are wrong. It thoroughly explains what a pit bull actually is, breeding wise, and what their personalities are actually like. It gives a rough history on the breed and the dogs considered as pit bulls, along with the different anatomy of different pit bull breeds. It also proves wrong the different myths surrounding the pit bull. Someone who loves the breed, or j I'm a Good Dog by Ken Foster is about the breed pit bulls and it talks about the different bad views on pit bulls and why most of them are wrong.

Someone who loves the breed, or just wants to learn more about these dogs would enjoy reading this book. It is a very easy read but it is also full of useful information about the dogs. A major message in this book is that people should not judge a dog by the way it looks on the outside or because of breeding, but rather, they should judge the animal on its personality. My overall rating for this book is four stars because while I enjoyed the book a lot and it provided a lot of information for a school project, It had a lot of distractions amidst the chapters.

Overall, this book is worth reading for anyone who wants to learn more about the breed and its characteristics, and I think those people would enjoy the information and personal stories the book has to offer. Nov 02, Bri rated it it was amazing. I love this book, it covers so many good points of pit bulls. Its a very good book for anyone that wants to learn more about the breed. I would recommend this book to any of my frineds an anyone that wanted to learn more about the breed. When you are doing reading it you will never look at a pit bull the same way. This book is very under rated. I wish the main stream media would get a hold of this book and learn a thing or two. I'm very happy with my purchase!

Thank you Ken Foster for writing such a good book.

Every pittie I've known has been a sweet, lovable clown. I expected this book to be a fun read. I was not disappointed. Foster obviously loves the pit breeds as much as many other people do. He's owned several and has founded a foundation to help support the rescue and placement of pit breeds. The book is a testament to the knowledge that pit bulls are just dogs, no more, no less.

Foster beg I will admit to being prejudiced toward liking this book from the start. Foster begins by asking "What is a pit bull? The breed seems to have shown up first in the UK, a mix of bulldogs and various terriers, aimed at producing a hunting dog with the bulldog's tenacity with the terrier's energy. They were used for bull baiting and boar hunting. The current breeds considered pit types include bull mastiffs and boxers, as well as the American pit bull, the Staffordshire terrier, and the bull terrier. To most people, a medium-sized dog with a blocky head and broad chest is a "pit bull", whether or not it has any amount of those recognized breeds in its genetics.

He also goes on to list what a pit bull is not, shooting down some popular myths about the breed. For example, pit bulls do not have "locking jaws" nor do their jaws exert more pressure than any other breed of dog. They were a staple in American households at the turn of the century, as many family photos prove. They are the companions of children, famous stars, and ordinary people. The book is full of anecdotes and stories of pit bulls and their owners, some famous, some not.

All are loved and considered a perfect pet. There are also many pictures of pits and their owners, living and loving life. Yes, the book is slanted in favor of pits as pets and companion dogs, but it also gives a good picture of these dogs and I think it will make anyone reconsider their opinion of this mix of breeds and types that is goofy, energetic, wiggly, loyal, loving, and most of all, just a dog.
