The story is a fictionalized account of the Spanish Conquistador Pizarro's kidnapping, ransom, and murder of the Inca king Atahuallpa. The theme of the book is the "Nichtigkeit alles Habens" the nothingness of all possessions. The narrative is recounted in the first person by one of Pizarro's former cavalry officers, who years after the plundering has retreated into a monastic life of solitude and penance.
