Please try again later. Some reviewers have complained that this book is not written in a "literary" fashion. It doesn't need to be. The writing is perfect in its ability to convey the nightmare that Gordon endured. I'm reading a lot of these books now as I see America blindly following after the same philosophy and politicians that the Germans did.

So far this is the best book in its genre. Gordon gives you a first-hand feeling of what it was like to live the normal, quiet and frugal life of a working Jew back then. And then the rug is pulled out from under you and you're treated worse than animals destined for slaughter. The orderal of the purges in the middle of the night, running 8 miles to the trains in only the clothes on your back in sub-zero temps, those who cannot keep up, shot and dumped in ditches; the 5 day hell on the trains with no food or water for the entirety of the journey.

Look at the nine-year-old's around you. They've barely begun to grasp the concept of Death, even less of savage cruelty and racism.

And that's as it should be. No id should have to dwell too much on Death at the beginning of their life. But Harold Gordon wasn't so lucky. His world, one of poverty but filled with love, was ripped apart by the Nazis, every second fraught with life-threatening danger. At that tender age, he had to figure out how to be alert, at the right place at the right time, saying what should be said and no more, taking advantage of every opportunity -- to survive. Thankfully he had his father with him. But in times such as those n the Holocaust, age disappears as children who surveyed had to grow up overnight and even be the emotional support their parents needed.

In a sane world, this story would be just a story.

In our world, it was all true. As I read more and more memoirs from that horrific time, I feel uncomfortable reviewing and rating these accounts as if they were ordinary books. After all, most were probably not written for their literary value. This is written fine, some events described with words that make your heart beat faster. I wish Gordon had not given away so many endings so early, but that's something one should say for regular books. It's an honest, open account, seeming to leave nothing untold. Children should read it. One point I would like to make though is that the price of this memoir should have been in line with others in the same category.

I just finished this very very good work. I am emotionaly, spiritualy overwhelmed. How could I complain about my life today?

This book brings to mind a reality that prior to reading this book did not exist in my safe, comfortable and well fed world. I am almost ashamed to have ever complained about things in my life. I am 47 with three Safe, Comfortable well fed children. They must read this book. To believe what we have today is normal, or in some youthful minds today a feeling of entitlement, would be greatly and desurvedly deminished apon completing this work of litarary art. It is with this in mind that I shall pass this book to my children, and ask my son to do the same for his.

With the passing of this book to my children and to their children Your story, life and family shall never be forgotten. Your Mothers memory shall live on through them. I know not what more I could do. Born in , he was just a young boy when the Nazi's conquered Poland.

He suffered through ghettos and camps, including the infamous Auschwitz where he nearly died. Incredibly, he survived to become one of the Sonderkommando of Auschwitz. Though this is written by Harold as an adult, it comes across in the voice of a child which I found most appealing. A good read that I recommend to everyone. This inspiring TRUE story should be made into a movie- for sure! I appreciate the author's courage to look evil in the eye and continue to hope in the overcoming of that evil, even as a young child.

It is important to learn about history and to be on guard that this is what can happen when people do not value others. The strength and bravely it took for Harold Gordon to endure and later to share his story is amazing. I saw a glimpse of what he experienced through his writings and hope that no one ever has to face such a horrible ordeal.

It makes me thankful for all th This is an excellent book written by a Jewish man reflecting on his youth during the horrible time of WW2 and the Holocaust. It makes me thankful for all that I have and can easily take for granted air, comfort, food, water, family, etc. I'm very glad that the author lived on to have a productive life, despite so many who wanted to snuff out his life, simply for his being Jewish. It shows how disgusting racism is, what it ultimately can lead to, and how we as people need to value each other.
