The Follies of Luvland

In one form or another, everyone connected with movies seems to spend most of his life and almost all of his energy on projects that are never realized. As we settle on the close-up of Alexis [Smith], we hear in the distance a voice cajoling everyone to smile, which she does, as a flashbulb goes off. Simultaneously with the flashbulb is the explosion. Was the project sunk by the tedious, deep-dish tone suggested by that Hiroshima line?

I cannot honestly accept the posture of a neophyte in the experienced world of MGM production. At that point the studios were scaling down and selling off their back lots, and Hal was trying to decide which one he wanted to blow up. I felt trapped by the sentimentality of the characters. I still feel that to this day. But 20th had another musical in development at the same time, and it came down to which one they felt like doing.

Executive-produced by Daniel Melnick, the film was an MGM musical omnibus in which old numbers were intercut with newly-shot clips of faded stars roaming the studio lot. Today, Prince is demurer on the issue. A ballplayer is old at thirty-five. Movie stars must go on: Then you career From career to career. Two years before he died, Orson Welles was still careering, and agonizing over the failure of his film F for Fake. Instead, they were relegated to touring productions, talk shows, and commercials.

June Allyson hawked adult diapers and Ann Miller tap-danced on giant soup cans. Her performance offers the only visceral hint of what a Follies movie might have been. But—nonexistent as they are—every number is so vivid to me. That's what the ghosts were like in the original production: Or she would see Young Ben.

Or Ben would see himself, all too clearly. Or Buddy would see the Young Sally never quite getting to the point of loving him back.

Follies is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Goldman . the couples are engulfed by their follies, which transform the rundown theatre into a fantastical "Loveland", an extravaganza even more grand . LOVELAND From the show "Follies" () (Stephen Sondheim) ENSEMBLE: Time stops, hearts are young, Only serenades are sung In Loveland, Where.

Or Phyllis would see the girl she used to be And then the ghosts would be invisible again--to the older characters but never to us. I could go on--and have before--but get it? Or, to put it another way, Follies is not a "realistic" show. Maybe it can be said thus: Which maybe difficult to pull off on film, but on stage it takes some creativity and how the ghosts can be seen to others and sometimes they are invisible, which makes FOLLIES a memorable experience that won't be forgotten.

Michael Bennett's staging of the ghosts were something else, that I can say as much from the footage I saw. Here--watch this silent footage from the original production the tour, actually synced to the soundboard.

Just when the old broads are getting tired and unable to fulfill the supposed original choreography of the "Mirror number" which is actually Michael Bennett's brilliantly structured evocation of period dance. I still get goosebumps even watching these blurry old videos. The really important part of the show was "Waiting For The Girls Upstairs", where the main characters reminisce so hard that their ghosts take the spotlight and the mains watch them, beguiled and a little upset.

It's a very tricky theatrical device, and the idea of Loveland is that the main characters literally bring back the past by not only arguing with each other but with their past selves about how they've wasted their lives by making wrong decisions. At the height of the argumentative chaos, the music roars and suddenly Loveland explodes around them, as you can see here: The fantasy breaks down at the end of Ben's number, collapsing into chaos as he desperately confronts and defends his actions. It never seemed to me, while watching the original production, anyway, that the couples momentarily saw a ghost of themselves.

Several show-stopping routines are provided by choreographer Warren Carlyle. Schaeffer is clearly unafraid of the darkness of Follies , so much so that the first act is bitter enough to sting. Yet he and Warren Carlyle Sondheim evokes the popular music of the prerock era.

The Time Magazine reviewer wrote of the Broadway revival: To appreciate the revival, you must buy into James Goldman's book, which is peddling a panoramically bleak take on marriage.

The show and the score have a double vision: Sondheim's songs aren't parodies or deconstructions; they are evocations that recognize the power of a love song. In or , Follies validates the legend that a Broadway show can be an event worth dressing up for. Brantley, reviewing the Encores!
