Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I absolutely Loved it and was overjoyed when i found out it was a Trilogy I am reading the last of this series now, and I hate for it to end. I have read all of Tamara's novels and i am hoping she is publishing more soo, I will go into a decline if I don't have a Tamara McKinley book lined up to read next..

I enjoyed this book. It goes from Cornwall to Australia and follows History at the time when convicts were transported to Australia. The love, heartbreaks and life of the hero's make such good reading it is hard to put down. I can't wait to read more of Tamara Mckinley's books. I bought that book as an introduction to my trip to Australlia in a few days.

It was a very pleasant way to learn about history through a roman style.

The best part in my opinion is the mix with the local perspectives and the migrants. The end comes a little bit out of the blue and weakens the book falling in the "happy end" type of novel. This was a highly enjoyable novel. I love reading Tamara's books they are full of heart and warmth. Easy to read to while away a lazy afternoon.

Published on March 28, Published on March 21, I found it poorly written, the story jumped around too much and entire chapters were completely irrelevant unless, I'm assuming, I go on to read the others in this series and the ridiculous ending to this one means there's no chance of that. An excellent book linking the lives of the aboriginal people with the English settlers. I learnt a lot about how the convicts were treated and how the aboriginal population were treated. I must first state that I only read this because it was the choice for my French book group this month -- I'd never heard of it and it's not something I would have chosen if I had.

So I was disappointed from the start as I had joined the group hoping to find French authors I would enjoy. I can't find very much to say which is positive. It starts with a story about Australian Aborigines thousands of years ago, before jumping to Cornwall in the late 18th century, where a poor fisherman's daughter i I must first state that I only read this because it was the choice for my French book group this month -- I'd never heard of it and it's not something I would have chosen if I had.

When the young scion goes off with Captain Cook, to Tahiti and then Australia, he is gone for three years; by the time he comes back, young sweetheart Susan has been pressured into marrying the local vicar. She raises a family with him and eventually they move to the penal colony which will become Sydney, where life is very harsh and primitive. Now throw in a hefty dose of melodrama leavened with excessively crude coincidences to push the plot along, a ludicrous court scene, and a completely ridiculous and implausible ending.

Unlike with Francis Spufford's Golden Hill , I never felt as if I was immersed in 18th-century society -- it was just a story that happened to be set at that time. Poorly developed characters and clunky prose don't help. I won't be reading the sequel. If anyone at the meeting tomorrow convinces me it has merit, I'll update this. One of the things I enjoyed about this book was the way it depicted life from different perspectives, in the early settlement of Sydney, with the arrival of the first fleet.

I feel like I have a deeper understanding of the pressures on both the indigenous and white communities. I felt a lot of emotion while reading the book, which had great descriptions of both the landscape and the human struggles. Jan 22, Lynne rated it it was amazing. Took me a while to get this book - wasn't easy! I bought the third book Legacy, not knowing it was part of a series and so just had to get the others! I was surprised how much I enjoyed this.

It's about the early days of Australia, concentrating on 2 families the Cadwalladers - the upper class ones - and the Penhalligans - the poor ones. It also has sections on the Aborigine people who were put off their land by the invading white man.

This has villains and goodies, transportation and hardship, Took me a while to get this book - wasn't easy! It was a very readable story, I enjoyed it a lot and will be reading the others in the series soon.
