Hell On The Way To Heaven

Hell on the Way to Heaven

Eventually Emma took her own life in at the age of Katie was injured in a serious car accident, indirectly related to the abuse in that she was intoxocated at the time part of her coping mechanism and illness. She was a pedestrian and the driver of the car was over the legal alcohol limit. She is still alive in her twenties today, partially paralysed, requires continuous care, and has the mental and emotional capacity of a year-old.

The priest responsible for the evil: Threaded through the story are three other principal narratives. The first is the story of the attempts of the Fosters and others to unravel the behaviour of the priest.

The Authors

Some in positions of authority in the Church today acknowledge that John Kevin O'Donnell was more than probably an abuser and paedophile since he was ordained in The tragedy of the Foster's story is that he had been identified as an abuser long before he had ever come anywhere near the Foster family — even long before Emma and Katie had even been born. Complaints had been made to senior people in the institution. Had those complaints been acted on Emma and Katie Foster would never have been placed at risk. So the second of these three narratives layered on top of the Foster family's personal horror and tragedy is about their efforts to uncover the errors made at the institutional level in not dealing with this abusive monster priest effectively and taking him out of being a risk to other people, particularly children.

There are five or six individuals named in the book all bishops today one of them now deceased who, at some point, had some intimate knowledge of this case or the complaints against O'Donnell. Some of them were not yet bishops at the time. I have to say none of them emerge from this book "smelling of roses". And that leads to the final theme being explored in this book: Is there something in the institutional culture that has provided a harbour for people who engage in sexual and other forms of abuse? Is there something that has developed in the institutional culture that tries to cover up the behaviour when it is exposed?

Why is it that more energy is put into protecting the institution and its leaders from scandal, or the hint that priests might be subject to the normal human frailties found in other human beings? As I wrote in my initial response on the Catholica Forum after I had just finished reading the book:. If it doesn't draw out in any reader the full gamut of emotions from trauma, sadness, tears, anger, joy, admiration, exhaustion, and even a sense of utter frustration that reader has neither a heart nor a soul.

The one big thing that confounds me about life is the seeming random way in which wealth and poverty, grief and bliss, pain and joy are distributed amongst us human beings. Some seem to be able to breeze through life with no significant worries yet others seem to lurch from one crisis to another. There seems to be no logic to this part of the design of Creation. Even within my own family I see some with a seemingly blessed life and others who struggle. Those who are blessed always seem to believe they were responsible of course because of their cleverness, astuteness, temperance, cautiousness, prayers or whatever quality they place great value on.

It's an old question of course. The Book of Job explores this conundrum of life in detail. When I look at the Foster family I wonder how God could have allowed so much pain and tragedy to descend on one household? It evokes in me similar feelings to those I felt when I learned of what Ann Thompson went through in Catholic orphanages in New Zealand.

Ann is a member of the Catholica community and her book "Say Sorry: It's not just having to live through this level of pain, the courage to overcome the embarrassment and humiliation and tell the story publicly is almost unbearable — more so when you are arraigned against one of the oldest and once most powerful institutions on earth that was able to bring kings to their knees.

As Chrissie Foster writes in the frontispiece to the book: An addictive psychological thriller with a shocking twist!

This is the harrowing, true story of a mother's struggle for justice. Chrissie and Anthony Foster were like any other young suburban family, raising their three daughters, Emma, Katie, and Aimee in a quiet spot and educating them with what they hoped were the right values.

Editorial Reviews

In Chrissie's case, these values were based on her Catholic faith; when she married Anthony, not a religious man, they both committed to bringing up their children in the faith, which included attending Catholic schools. Carefully driving her children to school each day, Chrissie could not have known that the stranger-danger she feared lurked not on the streets, but in the presbytery attached to the school.

There, an evil man dwelled whom the Church knew to be a long-term pedophile, moving him from parish to parish in order to avoid his career of sexual assault on children becoming public. This was Father Kevin O'Donnell. Chrissie and Anthony Foster began a battle to find out the truth of what had happened, and how it was that the very Church which promised to love and protect their children could slam the doors shut on them.

Instead, the Church offered silence, lies, denials, broken promises, and threats, until one day the Bag Man arrived. This is a courageous account of a family's suffering and their determination to stand up for themselves against the massive power of the Catholic Church.
