I could see how it would be hard to follow. The author also gets some slight details such as the name of things a little off. I chalk that up to writing from memory.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book very much. It's a great story that was worth telling. I easily give it five stars for material. I think there is definitely a great book here.

If it was organized more traditionally with chapters and a little more organization, I'd say five stars. As is, I still give it a solid four. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about what it was like to serve overseas in the Cold War. Thank you for sharing your story, and thank you for your service.

If you want to know what the peace time Army was like in the late 70,s and early 80,s this the book for you. So I can relate to a lot about what the author talks about the duties and the long hours. There's a lot more I could say but I would highly recommend this book Same situation, just the names and places are different. At the beginning of the events of Fallout: New Vegas the facility is controlled by the NCR, who have a detachment guarding the facility. At the front entrance is Lt. Haggerty , who must be convinced to allow the Courier in, or the player can lockpick a side door to gain entrance. Downstairs, the building's hallways circle in on themselves, leading to a pool room, where a unique toolbox that spawns either a sawed-off shotgun or a 10mm pistol can be found on a nearby shelf, as well as an open workshop leading upstairs, to the opposite side of the downstairs area, as well as a door leading further back into the building.

Traveling further back into the building is a "technician" , Fantastic , who is working on getting the power plant functioning; the room adjacent to Fantastic's contains a scientist, Ignacio Rivas. A nearby door leads to the mirror yard. Behind the main building is the solar collection tower and an array of computer-controlled mirrors. There are also two mirror control terminals in small shacks, and several tents set up by the NCR troopers guarding the facility. The western terminal is guarded by mines, bear traps, and a rigged shotgun, while the eastern terminal is guarded by NCR attack dogs.

Going straight ahead leads to an unlocked door to a small room containing several frag mines both active and inactive and an easy locked terminal.

The terminal can be hacked to shut off the turrets or get them to fire indiscriminately at all targets including the security robots. Near the entrance is a water fountain with no radiation. Downstairs is a small room with two pulse grenades on a shelf, and an average safe containing more pulse grenades and pulse mines plus miscellaneous loot. The level continues through a double-wide door and down a sloping corridor guarded by a leveled security bot.

The door at the bottom leads into another narrow corridor, leading to another multi-level room with stairways and catwalks, guarded by a Mister Gutsy. Often it is said in written reviews, "This is not the sort of book I usually read. I have not experienced the armed forces. Though I am pleased and proud to be an American and have given due respect to our military men and woman, I would have not read this book if I did not meet Doug Depew on a writer's discussion group.

He is likable and has a pleasant friendliness about him. He takes you with him to Germany and introduces you to his platoon, a family of new "brothers" while your mouth hangs open in shock at some of their shenanigans. Aligning himself with the perimeters of a serious mission, he manages to preserve his passion for fun, sex, relationships with beautiful German girls, booze banquets and insane ideas while off base. He exhibits a style of his own while he describes the years he spent in West Germany.

He had only been on earth for 18 years when he became a tower rat and reading Doug Depew's rendition of the trouble he and his beloved friends got into, I wasn't sure which mission was more dangerous, his outings in Germany or his tower responsibilities as a soldier. Seeing it all from a mother's vantage point, it was hard not to worry about him, and yet harder not to crack up laughing at some of his escapades with the daily threat of death hovering over that tower. This memory of a bunch of hormonal madmen loose in Germany is delightful - one storyof note - the Lt Colonel in the hotel No, you have to read it yourself! What I particularly liked about this memoir is the joyous and funny life those young men led. Oh yes, there was fighting and lots and lots of drinking they could have almost been Australians - but not quite! I am sure that eventually they all evolved into normal "ordinary" for they certainly were not so husbands and fathers: Having served in the same infantry battalion, 2nd BN 4th IN Regiment, at the same time but in Neu Ulm, this book is entirely authentic and gives an insight into an obscure piece of the Cold War.

Well worth the time. I have read many accounts of veterans from WWI to Vietnam. This one stands out on its own. All of the other books were of soldiers in the front lines fighting a known enemy. The main enemy in this book is boredom and the threat of being attacked. At first I was turned off by the content but then this isn't like "Chickenhawk," or "Soldat. How many of us remember the protests being carried on TV.

Wonder how many protests occurred in the Eastern Bloc countries during the same period? How does the average kid of 18 to 24 spend his days when not on duty?
