This is what we ended up doing: We hired a car and guide from our hotel-the Marriott on Zemelek and he drove us there, went in with us and took us to just the kind of stores we needed that the LOCALS shop at. A lot of visitors can't get past this because it's very intense. Our guide helped us "bargain" with the storekeepers and got us prices that made us and the storekeepers happy. We left after 4 hours feeling like we got what we wanted and weren't hassled to death, it can be truly exhausting.
He them met us at the Mosque after his prayers and drove us back to our hotel in the big air conditioned car. His name is Tarek and at the Marriott-Zemelek. Most hotels can get you this service. I have been to the Khan many times and it is much more fun to explore and haggle on your own. Agree with the historical aspect but you can catch up on this info in the guide books. Take your time in the Khan as it is a fascinating experience - just love the shopping, the haggling, the people, the coffee shops and meeting up with the friends that I have made there.

What I did to go to Marsa Matruh. The safest and reasonably priced way to go from Cairo to Marsa Matruh. The driver stopped about 2hrs from Marsa for a 45mintue hookah and coffee break the trip we left cairo 2am and arrived 9am. We picked up a Taxi from bus station to our hotel Jaz Almaza beach hotel the cost was Hopefully this feedback will help the next person. The resort is excellent and the beach is crystal clear. Can anyone tell me of a jewelry store that would sell this type of earring in Khan al Khalili or elsewhere in Cairo? Price can be mid to upper mid-range.
