October Breezes

She is an English teacher who lives in Oklahoma with her three children and husband. She loves reading, and if she could live in a novel, it would be Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn. Gavin Chester on Jan. Originally posted on my blog at http: October Breezes follows the life of a young high-school girl, Skye Williams, through many of the terrible experiences she goes through.

Other key characters include her mom; her mom's fiance, Warren; Her best friend, Devin, her new beau, Kellin; her unlikely ally in all the mess, Jimmy; the girl who wants her boyfriend, Becca; and the guy of her nightmares, Tyler. On the proverbial "high-school food-chain" Skye and Devin rank quite low, so low they don't exist to the "popular crowd". Kellin, Tyler, and Jimmy are all on the football team, and Kevin is the quarterback. Kellin and Jimmy are the opposite of all the stereotypes that just popped into your head.

Tyler follows said stereotypes to the dot. Becca is the witch with a capital B who controls the minds and actions of all the girls in the popular crowd, the "queen bee" you could say. Throughout the book Skye runs into problems that threaten to destroy her life, usually caused by Tyler and Becca. Devin tries to warn her, but every time she ignores him they grow farther and farther apart. He doesn't like Kellin, but Kellin isn't the problem, Tyler is. Becca pretty much hates Skye's guts, because she has the guy Becca wants more than anything else. I'd have to say I see through Devin's perspective the most, if I was asked.

I can relate to being in his shoes, trying to stop your close friend from dating a guy that is going to hurt her. I sympathize with Skye, but as I'm not a teenage girl, and have been in almost none of her problems myself, I can't really imagine being in her shoes. This is really good book, but it isn't the kind of book I would ever say I "enjoyed", because its an extremely sad story. I didn't like the story, but there was a very loud message being said through the story, and the message is a good one.

Throughout the book, I found myself on the edge of my seat, worrying for Skye, and wanting to punch Becca in the face. The writing is so good, it just drags you right into the story. I couldn't put it down My favorite part of the book was the ending, when we finally learn what the big deal with Becca is, and the couple that should have been together throughout the whole book finally come to terms with their feelings for each other.

See a Problem?

Okay, I have to tell you my absolute favorite part!! Mom is engaged to Warren Jacobs. Just about every painful adolescent dilemma imaginable -- some routine, others life-altering -- is thrown at Skye Williams. Though the subjects covered are very serious, this book can be used as good teaching tool for parents and young women. Don't say I didn't warn ya.

The ending to the book, was the best part because it ended all the sadness. My least favorite part was all the times Skye was abotu to do something stupid, and I couldn't warn her I know that makes me sound silly, but its true. I wouldn't ever change anything to the story, it was written perfectly as it should have been, and for that I congratulate Mrs Hooley. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any and all young adults out there who enjoy reading, and even a lot of those who don't enjoy reading should read it.

Thank you to Mrs. Hooley for giving me the chance to read this novel and enjoy it. Dave Conifer on Oct. October Breezes is written for a YA audience but this is a story so thought-provoking that it makes good reading for their parents as well. Just about every painful adolescent dilemma imaginable -- some routine, others life-altering -- is thrown at Skye Williams. Some she handles well and others she botches. The strength of the story is in how Skye picks up the pieces and who she turns to when life goes badly.

The characters are alive, and, more importantly, realistic. It was frustrating and very complicated, there were too many misunderstandings. It all just felt odd and contrived to me. All in all, I wouldn't recommend. It wasn't worth the money or time. Feb 08, Nicis rated it really liked it. Oct 29, Adriana rated it liked it. She takes on powerful topics — rape, abortion, suicide — and keeps a compassionate pen in their depiction. She also manages to give space to many of the different sides of an issue without taking a side. That is a difficult feat — one in which the author must disappear as much as possible into the book.

Main character Skye and her best friend Devin are at a crossroads when Skye begins to date a popular guy on the football team. Devin, like her father, walks out on her when he disapproves of her choices. High school, and this is high school as I remember it, with all of the cliques, yet a good deal of the cross-over.

By that I mean that Skye is not one of the popular crowd, yet several popular boys are interested in her. In many books, the groups do not intersect, but in most high schools it seems that they do. We also have Becca, the queen bee mean girl in school, who has her own reasons for her actions. I really liked Skye and found her reactions to be very true to how many teenage girls might act in her situation. The dynamic between Skye and her mother is also well done. The football players, happily, do not all fall into stereotypical boxes.

Unfortunately, his warnings have a ring of truth to them and Skye does find herself in a terrible situation. An excellent read for middle- to older-young adults and adults who enjoy reading young adult literature. Jul 08, Brooke rated it it was ok. I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. Skye's father left her and her mother when she was young, so she has this absolute hatred towards all men.

Yeah, one of those. Up until the plot twist, Skye is a rude, nasty and whiny little girl that is never happy with anything. Just because her father isn't in her life she believes she has the right to act like a silly little bitch to every one around her and then throw herself a pity party when they give her a taste of her ow I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. Just because her father isn't in her life she believes she has the right to act like a silly little bitch to every one around her and then throw herself a pity party when they give her a taste of her own medicine.

Every second person I know only has one parent. It's a common thing and you know what? But it ain't the end of the world. He left when she was around 5. Grow up and get over it. I didn't like Devin. He was a pretty shit friend. Skye has abandonment issues and Devin knows that. He tells her that she needs to learn to trust more.. Skye ended up going through some pretty awful shit, but never told anyone. I think Devin had some idea but just kept to himself.

Blaming her for every single one of his problems that was very much self inflicted. I felt disconnected from the characters from the beginning. I could never really grasp what kind of person any of the characters were. I'd think one thing about them then they'd do something the complete opposite and I'd be left more confused than ever.

I think the author tried to write one thing but it came out as another. Apr 11, Orchita rated it it was amazing. I started out with a good mind to give this book a 4. But that would be unfair, wouldn't it? I mean just because I went through an entire box of Kleenex doesn't mean that it was a bad book. October Breezes is a very touchy book. Being a girl, I was just SO angry for Skye, and what she had to go through. I mean, no one deserves that to happen to them. Not fictional characters, not even my worst enemy.

It was I started out with a good mind to give this book a 4. It was just so unfair how everyone kept judging her for her choice. This book made me realize a lot of things. Being pro-choice and all that, it only helped solidify my opinions. Yes, abortion is cruel, but sometimes it's the only choice. If Skye had carried to term, and given her baby up for adoption, would that have been any easier for her?

Would it rid her of the feeling of being defiled by such a VILE creature? It was so hard for me to read this book. I don't want to spoil October Breezes for those who consider reading it but you need to know there are some heavy themes in this book like rape, abortion, extreme bullying in school and a suicide attempt. This is really good book, but it isn't the kind of book I would ever say I "enjoyed", because its an extremely sad story. I didn't like the story, but there was a very loud message being said through the story, and the message is a good one. Throughout th It was so hard for me to read this book.

Throughout the book, I found myself on the edge of my seat, worrying for Skye, and wanting to punch Becca in the face. I think this is a good book for teenagers. They need to understand how much impact their word or actions have on other people especially if it involves bullying. I am only giving it 4 stars cause maybe Summer Sunsets will be better, Jul 26, Zara rated it it was amazing.

I started this book yesterday and after reading half of it i couldn't sleep. I just kept thinking about Skye and everything she went through. I can't say i enjoyed this book. I was just sad throughout the whole thing and that's why i gave it 5 stars because it made me feel so much for the characters, even Skye who at first i thought was naive in the beginning but as the story progressed i felt like i was able to see things through her eyes and it was painful. Hooley touches on a lot of issues an I started this book yesterday and after reading half of it i couldn't sleep. Hooley touches on a lot of issues and does this beautifully.

I can't wait to read the next book. Aug 29, Kimberly Kasper rated it it was amazing. I can say that I am tremendously glad that I read it. Maria Hooley has a writing style that I find very easy to read and her characters are always endearing. I fell in love with this story because some of Skye's issues hit very close to home. The story has a thrilling quality to it that makes you wonder what will happen next. Dec 24, Mayu rated it it was ok Shelves: Me ha encantado la protagonista, con todas sus decisiones, y sobre todo, con sus agallas para levantarse, aun cuando ella solo piense que va a estar rota por siempre, y que no se merece ser amada.

For starters, this book was very well written, being that this is a new author that i am not that use to reading from. I loved the story line of this book, but it was a bit to dramatic and at some parts it made me angry that the girl would not speak up about what was going on The main character Skye is a girl full of insecurities and has a lot of anger inside her. When her world turns upside down because of one night at a party,, it all blows up in her face.

Flores para mi tumba: Reseña: October Breezes

Dec 13, Anncleire rated it really liked it Shelves: Sometimes nothing is as it seems. Riusciranno a sopravvivere e a rimanere insieme?

Jan 06, Prescylla Veronica rated it liked it. Hasn't it been forever since I've written a review? I'm not about that at the moment. Honestly the cover of this book totally through me off on the book meter. I was so so so so so so so so so wrong about this book in all ways. I will tell you why in a series of numbers.

Before reading the book I did not read the synopsis. Because I honestly ju Well, well, well. Because I honestly just wanted to get over with reading the book. Honestly all I knew was, the girl's name is Skye and her name is Skye. I honestly thought this book was a fantasy book or something because of the cover. Go look at the cover right now. Okay you see how it looks like a fantasy typa book cover? Like the way her legs are crossed and she's in a semi fetus position. She looks like she has some powers or something. I don't feel like doing this series of numbers thing so I will just explain the plot.

So this book is about a girl named Skye, who has a best friend named Devin. Skye and Devin are really close and look out for each other. They are not in the "in crowd", so their kind of outcasts. One day, out of the blue, the cutest guy in school, Warren Jacobs, asks out Skye and that is when the problems really begin! Skye was your typically quite, shy girl, doesn't know she's pretty but is probably gorgeous girl. Yeah, my thoughts on Skye are that she's a very confused and depressed person.

I say this because she went through hell and back, had A LOT of bullets thrown in her life and really kept this all on the inside. Like literally, she was annoying, like I knew why, but damn. She just did things that erked me. Devin was an awesome best friend.

Honestly, he seemed like the really tall guy who's like awkwardly cute. And, awkwardly cute in the sense that you don't date him in high school, you date him like mid 20's when he's grown out of his awkwardness and becomes insanely hot with pretty man hands. If you don't know what pretty man hands are, they are the type of hands you just want holding you. Yeah, but besides his looks, Devin, was the sweetest guy ever. He was just so sweet that I wanted to like have him all to myself, to be my best friend.

I think his love for Skye was the most beautiful thing in the whole book. Therefore, I rate him.

Warren was that popular boy in school that every one crushed on and thought was super hot. I am talking captain of the football team, smart and he's rich. Loaded, like big house, nice car to himself, loaded. Okay, so for some mysterious unknown reason Warren decides to like Skye. To be honest I don't really know if he really liked her.

Like, I'm not saying it's impossible for outcasts and populars to have an attraction to each other BUT, in this book it's like Warren likes her but he's playing her. Like I was constantly getting that feeling. Any who, Warren and Skye started to date. I didn't like Warren because there was something about him that ticked me off. I don't know what that something is but when I do I'll let you know. Reader discretion is advised as I will possibly express my thoughts towards him with harsh words. Don't say I didn't warn ya. Tyler was Warren's bestfriend.

He is pure evil and should be punished for all the evil he had brought into that world. Honestly, I wanted to go into the book and report him myself. I hope the caps emphasize my hate. Oh man, that was really extra. The other characters are a bit irrelevant too. Like it caught me off guard, even though I kind of felt it coming. Okay, overall the book was cute, and inspiring. Because, it was real and stuff like this happens so I applaud the book for bringing up those issues.

I recommend this to all, and I hope yall have a great day, night, afternoon, whatever time your reading this. I send you a wish.

Aug 16, Stephanie rated it did not like it. This series was one of those where I have extremely mixed feelings about. Mainly because I found the books to be pretty much a pity party for Skye and extremely desperate from Devin yet at the same time, somewhat romantic because of the sheer amount of patience that Devin exuded.

The first thing that irked me about the book was Skye because she was so oblivious to everything aroun Link: The first thing that irked me about the book was Skye because she was so oblivious to everything around her and somehow guys would just fall at her feet. There was pretty much nothing else going about her. Not to mention, she had major trust issues and would actually push people away with her shitty attitude i.

But again, somehow the guys were just into her. In a way, the whole situation in high school was his fault because he left her to deal with her own problems so I can see why he is trying to make up for it now. However, at the same time, his inability to move on was a little annoying as well because literally he only thought about Skye and what she wanted.
