Didn't know what this book was about when it popped up in my kindle suggestions. I downloaded the book only because it was a true story, which I'm a sucker for. I started reading it during some down time at work and couldn't wait to get home to finish it. Well written and held my attention.

A comedy show about food

Every week on Spilled Milk, writers/comedians Molly Wizenberg and Matthew Amster-Burton start with a food-related topic, from apples to winter squash, and run. Spilled Milk has ratings and reviews. There were a few times where I wanted to stop reading when the subject matter touched too close to home, but it helped me deal with some past demons by forcing myself to continue. Touchy subject, but one that needs to be talked about. I bought this book for my teenage daughter as it was on her list of approved literature for her AP English class. I found the story to be very interesting but lacking in depth. In the beginning, as she recounts events of her childhood from a child's perspective the writing style and lack of emotion makes sense.

Towards the end of the book I began to question how true the story was, and the last few chapters had me rolling my eyes. The author glosses over emotional situations her mentor dying, her miscarriage, her mother but leaves plenty of room for pages of transcript facebook messages from her high school boyfriend. I suppose that is part of the trauma and healing but the detailed dialogue regarding herself and her accomplishments starts to sound a bit narcissistic and unbelievable.

We get it- people think you are beautiful, brave and special. Perhaps I am missing the point and her goal is to inspire other victims of abuse IDK. The lack of closure regarding her mother and siblings was also disappointing. Through out the book she paints herself as a martyr- her soul purpose to protect her siblings- but at some point in the book she just seems to totally forget about them. The real tragedy in the story is "the system"- children's services- I hope the author is using her experience to make changes as she states. Perhaps the book was meant for young adults and in that case I think it's probably a fine read.

And perhaps I am missing the point- that child abuse survivors can succeed and go on to do "great" things. I hope that is the case and those suffering will find inspiration in her book. Otherwise this 'based on a true story' has me questioning how 'true' it really is and questioning the author's motives. I love a good "based on a true story", and appreciate the author telling her story, as hard as it may have been.

I could tell she's a novice author, but for being such, she did a phenomenal job! It started a bit slow, but after finishing the book I appreciated she did so; she didn't throw in your face the plot. To have the guts, the spunk, and the valor to face such evil, gives me hope for many others.

Finally, I love the last chapter; it helped me and explained a lot to me. Thank you for sharing your story! Brooke spends her life trying to protect her younger siblings from their father's explosive anger, but she pays a special price. With sensitivity we are walked through the life of Brooke and her family that reaches a crisis point when Brooke decides to reveal her family's secrets. A well written book that rings true. I'm not an avid reader and wanted something to read on the treadmill. So much for the workout. I couldn't stop reading this well written first hand account of the horrors that took place in this family.

Apr 13, J. Willson rated it it was amazing. As much as the content is disturbing, and as much as I do not understand the 'moniker'- 'based on true events', this is a very solid write.

The story is detailed to the point that it becomes painful- but that is because of the subject matter and nothing else.

Thankfully the book itself is not written in the 'graphic sense', that only will come from the readers individual mind, yet that is difficult enough to process. DIR EN GREY - Spilled Milk

I especially liked the way the title itself has been worked into the story the way it has- the reasoning for the title itself if you will. Something usually only seen in the movies- when the main character refers to the movie title in his lines. I would definitely recommend this. Feb 14, Nada rated it it was amazing. The dialog was unreadable, especially the counselor, Midge. Nov 21, Tara Butler rated it it was amazing. So much praise for this book I cried through most of this story. When I was finished reading, I smiled. It's a story of heartache and absolute terror but it's also a story of survival and strength.
