What I love most about Xu Xi's works is her writing. In Hong Kong Rose, I really enjoyed the complexity of the female protagonist. In this one, though, I suppose I'm still processing what I read. I can't quite put my finger on it, but after reading this, I feel as though I've read something amazing.
Namely, something I can't yet quite comprehend. It is a story about the Hong Kong handover from another perspective.

I suppose I was expecting one thing, but what I got, was something completely diff What I love most about Xu Xi's works is her writing. I suppose I was expecting one thing, but what I got, was something completely different and what I got makes me wonder what it really means. This one is also more complex than HKR.
Where HKR was focussed on Rose's story, this book contained several perspectives: Andanna, Gail, Colleen, and Vince. Each one has something different. Andanna is Hong Kong through and through, and despite having studied in America, she doesn't enjoy speaking in English. She's a bit self-centred and selfish, but she does want to be something though even by the end of the book, it isn't clear if she'll succeed, but there's hope and she doesn't want to be something that imperialises the English.
For Gail, her story confused me a bit more. She was more bitter and mostly unlikable to me Andanna was also unlikeable too, but at least had some kind of drive to her that despite her unlikeability, made me interested in her story more.

I didn't have much patience with Gail, but at the same time, I do want to go back and understand her story more. Colleen was mildly interesting. Much like Andanna in a selfish kind of way, but her story was clearer. I like her character to some degree, in the sense that although she cheated on her husband, she loves him very much. Colleen too is a sinophile. She was always so fascinated by China that she learnt it's history, it's language, and wanted to live there. But because she's fully American in looks, she has doubted many times over the years - about her married life to Kwok Po, about going to Hong Kong, about reality.
And then there's Vince. How he ties into the story, is something I still need to think about. But he's a photographer, and originally we first meet him taking pics of Andanna, then we see him having an affair with Colleen. Learn more about Amazon Prime.
