Butterscotch Jones has other woes besides. Also, there was a nice spark of romance between Butterscotch and Chuck that could be promising for the series. I read one review where the reviewer took offense at some incorrect geographical references.
And the settings were described with enough detail that I could envision what was going on. Also, I thought the author had a good grasp of office politics, and small-town living. I liked this book and will read more in the series. Beckett Shiona Top Contributor: I always read the critical reviews of a novel before purchasing it, and, in this case, I have to say that those which mentioned that the characters weren't well-developed probably are correct.
However, for such a light-hearted mystery, I don't think that criticism bears much weight. As to the individual who protested the depiction of her hometown, well, not ever having been to Manitoba, I can't argue with her assessment. And while that reviewer may know for certain that there are no "glaciers" in the area, I assure her that in my own hometown we refer to the icy, hard snowpack that follows bad winter storms as "glaciers". However, the fictional town placed in Manitoba by the author, with a cast full of quirky characters, was humorous and entertaining.
I enjoyed the depiction of an inbred town full of redheads with similar last names, while the habit of giving nicknames to the characters reminded me with delight of one of my favorite movies, "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain.
Butterscotch Jones lives in McIntyre's Gulch, Canada, where no one is really who they seem but since they all have secrets, they just let everyone be The town considers not even reporting the crash to the next biggest town just so they can a keep the treasure, and b avoid the authorities One person found this helpful.
Too often cozy mysteries become thinly veiled replicas of over-used story lines. This book rose above that. I loved the Canadian setting. The author made it an integral part of the setting.
I lived in remote ND for a few years. Her protagonist's obstacles were on the money. I highly recommend this book. This book takes place in a secluded town in Canada, McIntyre's Gulch, where everyone has red hair and there are only two last names: This town is full of intriguing characters, including the main character, a young woman who has renamed herself Butterscotch after finding herself in troubled waters in the States. However, the seclusion of the town doesn't provide as much protection from the outside world at Butterscotch might have hoped when she accidentally finds a downed plane while walking her wold hybrid Max between major winter storms.
This grisly discovery is further complicated by the other items she finds in the plane and a town decision to contact the Mounties regarding the crash brings unexpected trouble as not only a Mountie shows up, but some rough looking members of the Russian Mob as well! The story is quick moving and the characters are intriguing. I am looking forward to reading more about Butterscotch and will be reading the next novel in the series soon! Delightful little story about a whole town of kind of crazy characters whose resident finds a plane crash, a dead pilot and a whole bunch of money and other tasty objects.
What the town decides to do with it all and the Mountie that comes to investigate it is very compelling. I loved the tongue in cheek wit and the people in the book are very sweet and even though all a bit crooked, delightful people. I love this series. I read them all in just a few days.
The setting and characters are unique and quirky. I love the way all of the town comes together to take care of their own. The red hair, the Gaelic, the "bears" - it's wonderful fun. The plot was quite interesting, about a drug dealer's courier's death in a winter storm in northern Manitoba, but some of the scenarios were a bit incredulous.
