Climbing St. Friday: A Coming-of-Age Story

What's most interesting about it is all the lying and other moral quandaries and ambiguities. There are questions not only of courage, but of honor, loyalty, identity, brotherhood. Small-scale politics and economics even play a role. And yet it's still a very readable adventure. Highly recommended to reluctant readers. Teen males, of course. Sep 15, IanL rated it really liked it. In the book, Rudi Matt's father died on the citadel, a mountain that he wanted to conquer.

But since his father died on the mountain, Rudi's mother and uncle won't let him climb, even though it's in his blood. Rudi would still sneak off to the citadel to try and climb up the glacier and find a route up to the fortress, the place his father died. One day, Rudi is climbing the glacier and heard someone screaming for help from a crevasse, Rudi helped the person out of the crevasse and it turned out In the book, Rudi Matt's father died on the citadel, a mountain that he wanted to conquer.

One day, Rudi is climbing the glacier and heard someone screaming for help from a crevasse, Rudi helped the person out of the crevasse and it turned out to be a famous mountaineer. This was Rudi's lucky break because he then was able to go climbing a mountain with his uncle and the mountaineer, Mr. Then he messes up and gets trapped would never be allowed near the mountains ever again. So he runs away up to the citadel to climb it with Mr. Winter and another guide from a different town. They take Rudi on a reconnaissance of their route and head back down to the mountain to the cabin.

Then Rudi's uncle and other guides come up to the cabin to try to take Rudi back and then take the other two men down with them too. Then Rudi and the men don't go down and Rudi's uncle comes with them to climb the citadel as well. Then the men climb up past the fortress, then past the needle, which they couldn't have done without Rudi, and then they made it to the top and Rudi's "banner" was hung at the summit. In the book, there were a lot of lessons that were kind of hidden and said in different words.

Some of the messages were things like, you can't stop someone from doing something they were born to do. Another was, don't try to stop someone that is determined. Something else I noticed was Rudi's "banner" the shirt his father always wore when he was climbing a mountain, was a sort of symbol and motivator Rudi used to remind himself of either the dangers of the mountain, the reason he is climbing the citadel, or to encourage him to finish his father's dream. For example, the only reason the men conquered the citadel was because Rudi was small and strong enough to fit through the needle and pull everyone through.

So the message was that no matter how different you are, your differences will always have their advantages. Feb 26, Allison Tebo rated it really liked it Shelves: A lovely, old-fashioned flow of writing and the very best sort of a coming-of-age story. W can feel the rock scrapping our palms, feel our toes grasping for footholds. The thin rope cutting into our waist is the only thing that makes the difference between balance — and an endless plunge.

We feel the ice-wind slicing through us, feel the blue sky that is bluest of all in a mountain shining on us, feel the savage storm screaming in our ears. Sep 12, Cindy rated it it was amazing. It is a great book about mountain climbing, lots of cool techinical stuff for mountaineers like Joe, yet understandable for those of us with no mountain climbing experience. But it is so much more! It's a beautiful story about conquering fear, working toward a goal, the effects of selfishness and the rewards of selflessness, banding together for the common good, and so much more.

In his introduction, the author said he hopes that the story makes for "good climbing". Jun 21, Anthony Connolly rated it it was amazing. A junior high school required text. Very fond of it then and one of the early indications my life would be filled with books. Apr 25, Luisa Knight rated it liked it Shelves: This was a hard book to put down! For those adventurous souls that like to read about daring and do, this is a gutsy mountain climbing story that provides some good moral lessons to discuss too.

Ok, so this is a book for 6th - 8th graders that I was assigned to read for a course I am teaching this summer, and I expected to get through it, but I did not expect to enjoy the book as much as I did. This is an exciting coming-of-age adventure about rock climbing that kept me in suspense and surprise the entire read. His thought processes and emotional life, although simply written, develop into something incredibly vivid. In the end, the best friendship forged is the one between the reader and Rudi.

I liked it very much, and I am looking forward to teaching this book! Feb 28, Carlos S rated it really liked it. The story is based on the ascent of the Matterhorn. The book follows Rudi Matt as he dares to conquer the final undiscovered peak of the Alps. The book spends paragraphs devoted to describing all the mountains edges and cliffs, and the difficulty in climbing them.

The climbing itself is so vividly described that it is Banner in the sky by James Ramsey Ullman is a realistic fiction set in the Swiss Alps. The climbing itself is so vividly described that it is no surprise that the author himself is an avid mountaineer. This can at times, seemingly lag the story behind as the descriptions never seem to end. The main character Rudi is an interesting character as we see throughout the course of the story how he grows and changes as a person. I recommend this book to fans of realistic fiction or people who want stories that have characters that grow and change throughout the story.

Every day of his life he's stared up at the Citadel, the one remaining unclimbed peak in the Alps.

Fifteen years ago three men tried that climb. One, the hotel cook who is Rudi's boss, came back crippled.

But Rudi can't help himself. He has to climb. When he meets another famous English mountaineer, Captain John Winter - and proves his strength and skill by saving Winter's life - it's only a matter of time.

The Citadel waits to be climbed, and Josef Matt's son knows he's the man who must climb it. It's smoothly yet colorfully written, and anyone whose youthful dreams a careful parent couldn't share is sure to experience Rudi's coming of age right along with him. Its about a boy named Rudi Matt. His dad died trying to climb the citadel. He wants to climb to the top of the mountain and put a red flannel shirt. The shirt symbolizes his dads goal that he wants to complete. At the end he dosen't make it to the top. He stays back with Saxo. Captain winters and Uncle franz went to the top and said Rudi went to the top and put the red shirt. Jan 17, Simon rated it liked it. The red flannel shirt shakes wildly on the summit of the Citadel. He went down, down and down. Down to the Citadel. The first peak of the Scandinavian sun light melts the flimsy layer of the pure snow on the Citadel's summit, on the summit was hope, it was the dream for several generations on kurtalers, it was supposed to be Rudi's mountain, but now, the summit was silence, the silence of death, I will wait, wait for Rudi Matt.

I peacefully closed the book, now I had finished it, but my nerves are still tensely struggling. I fondle the fine and smooth cover of Banner in the sky, now, I had finished a bottle of strong vodka, but now for me, it actually tasted like a exquisite champagne flow in your body, I keep forgetting to return to the cruel reality. This mountaineering story will absolutely earn your finest extol, but along the climb, there were also some rough and unclimbable points that would challenge you.

Hold on to your axe and watch out for the obstacle right in front of you, be careful, cause you and I might fall down. A skinny shadow of a boy was bouncing around the glacier of the Citadel, suddenly, he stopped and glanced highly up the sky, until his eyes met the summit, this was his what he truly was. This was Rudi Matt. I see Rudi in my eyes, sparseness and emptiness was filled up in his body. He looks like a south European; black thick hair with a gentle body, desolate white skin that makes me worry. But he will accomplish his dream, he is Rudi Matt, the Citadel belongs to him!

I glance at the infinite night sky, Rudi Matt's face appeared in my heart again, he was a determined and mature boy as he develops in the whole plot and setting, His eyes revealed a sense of maturity that is way beyond his age level and a cold-blooded knife that you are feeling in your hand. Do you feel your breath struggling against high altitude? Wear the red flannel shirt, the spirit was passed on, will you also pass it on? The story also had some excellent elements that hooked me really in to the story. The symbolism in the story was actually very deeply secured inside a object that can represent the whole story, and was presented in a low-profile way that actually appears every time that it was needed.

Although the story looked pretty and elegant and invulnerable on the out side plot and setting but it was actually empty in the inner side, if you are a deep thinker and reader, this book might be a little bit shallow for you, it needs a stable theme and a clear plot line to sustain the whole story development, although the whole development and the transition between story scenes happened fast and accurate, the plot line didn't really give me time to stop and think, predict, these elements were especially important for a reader to understand a book well, the events happened too fast in a row, the important dialects and descriptions were less described and was not that eye catching When he had to struggle between his family and dream.

I personally oppose this action that the author did, it needs 1 word to conclude the whole story. The plot contained many themes and feelings, but every theme was used in only 1 stage and then changes. Sometimes, it is just a legacy passed on and on, just like the red flannel shirt that was passed on to Rudi's legacy. The red flannel shirt of Rudi's father was the symbol that walks through the whole story, and the main symbol for the whole story, it was what his father's goal is to reach the summit on the Citadel , and when his dream did not fulfil, his son was prepared to inherit his dream, so he picked up the flannel shirt and was going to climb the Citadel, the red flannel shirt also changes its "mood" through the whole story line, for example, when Rudi was restricted by his family not to climb any mountain, the red flannel shirt appeared in a rotten and ragged way.

Climb upon the summit of the Citadel, roar to your honor as the ruthless wind of mother nature tears up your helpless bones, this was the summit only for you, this was the summit of the red flannel shirt, this was the summit of Rudi Matt, this was the summit of Kurtal. I think this book is a privilege and a masterpiece for action readers, the story accurately described a mountain climbing event, but if you like to dig deep and taste the juice under the skin of the book, you might be a little frustrated due to the fast transitions and the flashing development, this book was a huge cup of strong drink but instead I prefer a smooth cup of hot chocolate.

I would not really recommend this book to others, people reads a book to understand its life philosophy and a main idea to tell, but instead this book can be called "meanings that were diluted by actions", anyway it was still a wonderful experience that you can read this book. Love can be diverse, or can be just a red shirt tied on a pole that was planted on the highest point of the Citadel.

He now shall walk left or right? Right to his family. This book is like climbing up a mountain, you keep climbing and climbing with all you might, but your slipping.
