How to Raise a Brighter Child

This book was written a generation ago but the psychology is very relevant today. The author outlines the critical mental development stages for children from months, 18 months to three years, three years old to six years old, and six years old to nine years old. She notes that the evidence for our adult level IQ is determined by the age of 9, and offers numerous ways to advance the minds of kids. Really cool read, with some great ideas on development.

One person found this helpful. My son is 34 years old. I happened upon the book when he was - oh - two. We used many of the suggestions in the book in raising him, and I really believe it was instrumental in his development. He grew up to be outstanding in music played with a professional orchestra since before he was 12 , academics - presidential scholar one of each year for the entire USA , graduated with honors in computer sciences from an ivy-league school and went on to grad school to become an architect because he didn't want to spend his life in front of a computer.

He is also one of the most moral and socially adept people I know. Some of the most memorable advice in the book - if your child is bright, don't try to have him skip grades, but develop his lateral skills. Saved us a lot of cash too! I can't thank Ms. I am very excited to see there's a new edition to the book and am purchasing it for my future grandkid s , since my son got married last summer to a lovely woman. I was a young new mom and scared to death when the doctors told me that my new baby MAY be slightly learning disabled and in need of surgery to correct a very rare birth defect.

I read every book I could find concerning the brain, its function, learning, IQ, etc He has won both academic and sports related awards to attest to his mental and physical capabilities. The surgery turned out with much praying to be nothing more than a cosmetic correction. The book helped me to appreciate just how much and how fast a baby learned, that its IQ was established before school age, and how much a parent can do to easily help it learn more. This book IS the missing 'Owner's Manual' for a new baby.

I have given a copy to every first time parent I have ever met instead of the traditional pair of crochet booties.

Frequently bought together

I originally purchased this book when my oldest child was born 32 years ago. I have since then purchased copies to give to my now adult children in the hopes that they will use them as they parent my grandchildren. This is Montessori teaching method adapted for families. The core idea is that letters and numbers are a part of the world we live in and you do not have to put a child in a chair with a book to teach them reading, science, or math concepts.

The first six years of a child's life are when their brains are developing the fastest, and the better a family can help children grasp basic letter and number concepts the more successful they will be when they get to a structured school environment. It really does matter!

My children were all able to do very well in school and at College.

I'm no Tiger Mom, this is simple and painless - its more about being aware of how many teaching opportunities a parent naturally has available simply living in this world with their child. How can parents safely use computers and the Internet as early learning tools? Is a child's intelligence level actually fixed for life by inherited genes? You'll find the answers to these and hundreds of other vital questions in this revised and updated edition of this classic parenting guide.

There was nothing groundbreaking as far as explanation of cognitive development. I read this book 19 years ago, and I have to say I think it helped in my child rearing. My son just turned 19, is a pre-med junior in college and plans to be, of all things, a neuro-surgeon! I would say that this book influenced me to constantly provide challenges for him and to never underestimate his potential. I think this should hold true for every child. It's our job to provide opportunities for them to learn and grow in whatever areas they show interest in!
