This book was written a generation ago but the psychology is very relevant today. The author outlines the critical mental development stages for children from months, 18 months to three years, three years old to six years old, and six years old to nine years old. She notes that the evidence for our adult level IQ is determined by the age of 9, and offers numerous ways to advance the minds of kids. Really cool read, with some great ideas on development.

I read every book I could find concerning the brain, its function, learning, IQ, etc He has won both academic and sports related awards to attest to his mental and physical capabilities. The surgery turned out with much praying to be nothing more than a cosmetic correction. The book helped me to appreciate just how much and how fast a baby learned, that its IQ was established before school age, and how much a parent can do to easily help it learn more. This book IS the missing 'Owner's Manual' for a new baby.
I have given a copy to every first time parent I have ever met instead of the traditional pair of crochet booties.
I originally purchased this book when my oldest child was born 32 years ago. The core idea is that letters and numbers are a part of the world we live in and you do not have to put a child in a chair with a book to teach them reading, science, or math concepts.
The first six years of a child's life are when their brains are developing the fastest, and the better a family can help children grasp basic letter and number concepts the more successful they will be when they get to a structured school environment. It really does matter!
My children were all able to do very well in school and at College.
