Some of these, like Goffman, I ought to have noticed — I even have proof someone told me about them, but still he wizzed by unnoticed.

I might as well drop my two cents into this debate and say that I tend to agree with Bourdieu here. And that is the relationship between structure and agency — what we think is structure, becomes agency as soon as we start being specific, and the opposite is also true.
This book makes this point by its very structure.
These were incredibly useful and provide a real insight into both the ideas of the thinkers and just enough background to make sense of these ideas. One of the things I particularly liked in the introduction was the rehearsal of Kant's argument that the proper place to define terms is at the end of a discussion, rather than at the start.
Words are like empty buckets which we fill with meaning through use. Still, if you are looking for an overview of social theory, this really is the book you are after. Each chapter is a very brief overview of the topic, and discussion of the main theoretical writers in the area.
It whets your appetite, then bam! It's not something I could recommend as a text to a student, for example, because it doesn't cover nearly enough information. Richard's review cleared up my confusion.
