But there are about very early manuscripts of Marco Polo's book in existence. The tales — most of them solid and factual; some outright fanciful — have fuelled a kind of Marco Polo cult that has lasted over years. Scholars have argued for centuries whether he went to all those places, whether his stories are true.

Someone offers him the chance to save his soul if he will just admit that what he wrote was mostly lies. And although that story is pure myth, it comes close to the essence of the story of Marco Polo.

He also comments on the internal evidence within the narrative that give some indication whether Polo experienced the various events first hand or is retelling stories told to him. We know about Marco Polo based on his own writing that he did while in a Genoese prison, written with the help of a romance writer from Pisa, and written first in broken French. The book is also an excellent source on the remarkable reign of Kublai Khan.
