NOT THAT WELL ROUNDED

When I hear someone described as "well-rounded" I take it to mean intelligent, capable and personable. Of course it can be a crude reference to a woman's figure, but I wouldn't expect that unless the speaker were known to be habitually disrespectful. Naomi Watanabe is well-rounded in every way - This is a compliment. I would agree with NKM for me "well-rounded" is a compliment meaning a person is capable , knowledgable and has a good personality.

There may be some who use it to mean something else, but it's not the usage that comes to mind for me. I lack the imagination for a witty signature.

well-rounded

People refrain from using the English language correctly "just in case" some deranged individual with too much time on their hands "might", in the depths of THEIR ignorance, tease some far-fetched "insult" in it! The book is mixed with high drama, heart break and humor that we who have been through addictions can relate to. I know Jerry, though I haven't seen him for many years. Sunday, November 12, 4: Monday, January 15, 1: Monday, November 13, I see the importance each day of a well-rounded education and the excitement it brings.

From a woman's perspective - it would not occur to me either that it meant anything else. I'd also just think of a "capable, knowledgeable person with a great personality" as Sarries said. What comes to mind is something that is inclusive and comprehensive of the situation the thing is a part of. It is formed and shaped to be of good use. A well-rounded meal would encompass bits and pieces all that is beneficial and satisfying. A well-rounded person has been exposed to other cultures and ways and has balanced the knowledge in a way that allows them to be beneficial.

Most people add on the words "person" or "individual" to the words "well-rounded", just to be clear. It would only be taken as an insult primarily by women if you made it clear you were referring to a woman's figure. We should look to the past to learn from it, not destroy our future because of it — FounDit.

Good heavens - we're talking at cross-purposes here. While I said that no other meaning would occur to me that's just because 'well-rounded' ONLY means one thing to me as a collocation. But why would it be an "insult"? Is it because some people might think "well-rounded" meant "fat"?

Once again, I wouldn't see it like that at all. It's a very non-sexual way to describe someone who has fine proportions, surely - and is 'round' in all the right places? I would find it a rather pleasant comment - especially as I'm not "round" even in the places I should be!! I suppose it is like Hedy says - a phrase to use with a little caution know your audience!

I have the same attitude as Romany , really. Something 'well-burned' is burned as it should be. Something 'badly-burned' is burned more than it should be. Once a rarity, now found in every specialist bakery. Also known in Britain as 'well-fired loaves'. It could well be taken that way, and in today's hyper-sensitive world, there are many who look for a reason to be insulted. Such individuals would have no problem taking it the wrong way. Add to that the idea that it objectifies a woman's body when used for a female, and you have grounds for such offense in their minds.

Foundit, Well, even if I thought that pertained to where I live I'm referring to the city, not the entire United Kingdom , I should, for that very reason then, refuse to conform to such a silly scenario. Drago says he's experienced the same thing. People refrain from using the English language correctly "just in case" some deranged individual with too much time on their hands "might", in the depths of THEIR ignorance, tease some far-fetched "insult" in it!

I'd defend myself with the English language in which "well-rounded" has absolutely no actionable policy on the use of the phrase, nor any societal or cultural restraints either! I had exactly the same reaction as Hedy did as soon as I saw the title of the topic; the only thing that popped into my mind was: I am the way, and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Me.

Then immediately quote something from John or the other three? I am a lay-about. Becoming a Well Rounded Person -- Be More Productive

He used to own a Gym in the Iowa City area that I hung out at a few times. One time I was there, sitting on a weight bench, and he walked up behind me and started giving me a haircut, just walked up with scissors and a comb and went to giving me a haircut.

Freaked me out pretty good at first, I guarantee you, but there was no ill intent, and in the end he was just being Jerry, he like's helping people out, and I did need a haircut. He had this white board on the wall in his Gym where he would record bench press weights as a motivational tool, mine was pitifully light, but he never judged. He also used to do this annual thing where on New Years people could call and get a free ride home, no questions asked.

I participated in it a couple times. It was based from the Gym, and we would take off from there to pick drunk people up in our own vehicles and take them home safely. Those were actually pretty fun. A bunch of us would hang out at the Gym all night and when the phone rang Jerry would come out and announce Whose turn is it?!!! I just downloaded the book, hence haven't read it yet, and will update this when I do read it.

Amazing story about what happens when we take control of our lives and live only for our imagined needs and desires. We lose our way more and more giving in to our self-centered addictions. So much I could relate too, but what I couldn't relate too was understandable. The book kept me flipping the next page and was well written.

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. I have a short attention span but this book kept me reading and I couldn't wait to find out what he was going to do next. I felt like I was on a roller coaster for the first time because I had no idea what to expect at the next turn.

I really enjoyed the book and only have one complaint A must read, Once I started reading I could not put it down, A story of a troubled young man and his way of getting by for years, Although he knew he was not dealing with things correctly his addiction was in charge and took control of his life for many years. What a nice treat! We were all very excited, this was our first author event. Jerry was very sweet in agreeing to come to our meeting to be quized by 10 very chatty women. The meeting was a fun and interesting event.

Jerry and Kimberly answered all of our questions honestly in a anything go's style. We are thankful to them for taking the time to spend an evening with us to shine a light on the world of addiction. As for the book, it was hard to read what the author has gone through. He lived a hard, rough, even scray at times wild life. This book is full of his crazy tails, that at times are so crazy they must be true. What's the saying "You can't make this stuff up".

Well in Jerry's case that is so true. This book is a wild ride, lacking only in the fact that he did not cover more of his road to recovery and enlightenment. Here's hoping that will be covered in his second book. I wish the author Jerry and his very sweet wife Kimberly best of luck in there sobriety!
