I determined that my first post-college job should be away from the West Coast in Chicago and scrambled to get a leg up on the natives.

A then-friend recommended a 'consultant,' someone who decided she could rip-off anxious job-seekers by being a style advisor. She got my check so it worked, but her advice belonged in the era of Mad Men. Some of the highlights: It doesn't matter what you wear after you get the job but wear a skirt for the interview.

I know, I know, these days it's I determined that my first post-college job should be away from the West Coast in Chicago and scrambled to get a leg up on the natives. I know, I know, these days it's common for women to wear pants but you're more likely to get hired with a skirt. Definitely do the interview with your hair down. It softens the face.

You can do what you like after you get the job but leave the hair down for the interview. Hold your bag firmly and swing your other arm. You want to look dynamic for the interview. I can appreciate her focus - getthejobgetthejobgetthejob which was as advertised - and the importance of body language. What I didn't appreciate was how completely she bowed to the stupid idea that appearance is everything although it is important, unfairly if maybe unconsciously weighted.

How about ways to overcome stereotypes? How about not presenting a false first image? I think she didn't quite realize the difference between engineers and other professionals. Ever hear that one joke about the engineer and the bicycle? Two engineers were walking when one asked, "Where did you get that bike? She recommended I read this book before the scheduled appointment.

I should've taken the book suggestion and said 'thanks, no need for a session with you! Some parts, like the thank you notes, are not always true and have been contradicted by most interviewers I've known workmates, not someone interviewing me.

At the current rate of unemployment, it's good to have more knowledge and sometimes a little thing can give you just the edge necessary to beat out other hopefuls. Reading this book may shoot some points into your mind that will stick and be useful in that crucial interview window when your mind feels blank and all you can think about are the past-due bills, groceries, kids, etc. Just take it, and any other advice you receive, with a shaker of salt.

I feel like this book could have been cut in half I skipped over a ton of stuff. Two very questionable pieces of advice from the author: What would Miss Manners say?

Both of these go against all common courtesy. I personally have chosen not to follow this advice. The author knows what he is talking about - he has conducted many interviews of all types and knows what hiring authorities are looking for because he himself is one. I learned what really matters during the interview process.

Some of the things he said surprised me - they didn't match up with other sources and tips. Linda rated it it was amazing Shelves: From Amazon I loved this book and ended up getting jobs that I didn't even qualify for! This book covers everything from where to look when in an interview to the best time to send a resume and the best time to schedule it It teaches principles and illustrates them in examples.

From Amazon I wish I had read this book earlier. What distinguishs this book from hundreds of other interview books is: My local library I am in Toronto! The public library rocks!

Sweaty Palms: The Neglected Art of Being Interviewed

I have skimed through almost a hundred and read thoroughly around ten books. I found no book better than this one on teaching principles.

The author has rich experience in interviewing and negotiating. His lawyer profession also gives this book an edge--managing an interviewer's feeling just like managing a jury's. I suggest you buy this book. Because it worthes you time to read letter by letter, again and again.

You can then skim through other books, picking good points and overlooking nonsense. I remember a book teaches me to mention "My only weakness is I am working too hard. I don't think people saying that can ever get a decent job I disagree with the author on two points. The first one is about sending thank-you notes after interview.

I don't understand why the author wastes so many pages to support his not sending thank-you notes argument. As another reader in this website points out, many recruiters actually appreciate the thank-you notes. I saw once in a HR manager's office that she displayed one thank-you note in her desk! And I don't believe a thank-you note will reduce your chances, since normal persons will feel positive when receiving others' appreciation. But the author is right--the ultimate factor is the combination of your qualification, performance, and etc; a thank-you note will make a little difference.

  1. See a Problem?.
  2. Walking Israel: A Personal Search for the Soul of a Nation.
  3. Sweaty Palms: The Neglected Art of Being Interviewed - H. Anthony Medley - Google Книги.
  4. The Plant Endoplasmic Reticulum: 4 (Plant Cell Monographs)!

It seems to me that the author is too busy showing off how he defies the conventional wisdom and forgets to use common sense, which I believe he has a sharp one, to examine this minor issue. Nevertheless, this book is excellent and will definitely make difference for your interview! Very commonsensical and applicable.

I doubled my salary with this book From Amazon Sure, this is written for the corporate crowd more specifically, from a lawyer's perspective , but it is full of useful information. Using the guidance in this book, I navigated my way through a two-part, three-person interview that got me the job I needed to get my feet on the ground and start running!

I refer to this book any time I have an interview.
