What is Kobo Super Points?

My favorite out of this trilogy, it was so cute and romantic. Dancing On the Wind. She is all he has ever wanted and everything he cannot have. Call him whatever you want - the bad guy on Twin Peaks was named "Bob" and that didn't detract from his creepiness - just don't call him Napoleon. I was really cheering for this pair throughout the book. Then a few scenes later, he just beds her with no expectation of marriage. Published on October 22,

Gorgeous hero and heroine, hot lovin'. Okay, I just have one thing to say about this book: Very tantalizing and adventurous story! Apr 20, Shannon Gallagher rated it it was amazing Shelves: A description rich read.

Although the characters in book 1 and 2 are very similar they were great books and worth the read. Nov 12, Maggie rated it it was ok Shelves: Princess is the second in Gaelen Foley's Ascension trilogy. I loved The Pirate Prince. Foley's books are what I call "classic, traditional" romance novels. Straight out the '70s even though they were written near the end of the 90s.

Rife with words like "manhood" and "woman's flesh. In The Pirates Prince, I could overlook it, because the story was so good. In Princess, I couldn't do the same. There was a teaser for Princess at the end of The Pirate Prince and from that I was so excited to read it. The hero, Darius Santiago, was introduced in the previous book as the little gypsy boy that Lazar and Allegra picked up from the villain's lair.

Darius grew up as the King's ward and took up the head of security post in Ascension. He's a spy, assassin, and bodyguard of Princess Serafina ever since she was a baby. The novel starts out great.

See a Problem?

Serafina's running from bad guys who want to harm her. She escapes into a garden maze. Darius saves her, but she watches him murder one of the bad guys in a brutal way. We learn that Serafina's loved Darius all her life, and actually threw herself at him a couple of years ago. He humiliated her by rejecting her. We learn that the action of walking away from her that night was the hardest thing Darius has ever done.

Serafina is everything Darius has ever wanted, but he can't have her because he "doesn't know how to love someone" which, is there a romance novel trope that is more overused or I hate more?

This book takes place during Napoleon's time, and Ascension is nearly embroiled in a political war, only avoided by Serafina's engagement to a Russian prince who will provide the military support in the case of France attacking Ascension. Kind of confusing, but, again, doesn't really matter. All you need to know is that in order for Ascension to stay independent and out of war, Serafina has to marry this disgusting Russian prince who may or may not have murdered his first wife.

Meanwhile, Darius has conducted a plan to free Serafina from her engagement. He's going to assassinate Napoleon. I was so disappointed by this novel. It started out exciting and interesting, but the more these two characters interacted and fought, the less I understood their actions. Serafina and Darius are well-rounded characters, I give props to Foley for that. But it doesn't help that I don't like them at all. Serafina's spoiled, selfish, immature, manipulative. Darius is insecure, immature, stubborn, and also manipulative.

So, maybe they're meant for each other on that level? When these two interact with each other, it almost reminded me of that other romance novel relationship: In the beginning of the story, the Heroine is involve with a man that the reader and the Hero knows is just completely wrong for her. But in this book, Darius is that man. I just kept expecting someone else to come in and be like, "Serafina!

You and Darius do not belong together! You and I belong together! I don't like Serafina. Their relationship fight comes out of nowhere. Foley tells us that Serafina pretty much propositioned Darius one time and Darius said an emphatic NO. But they've somehow remained cordial and almost friend-like ever since. Then, suddenly, on page , they're all, "I'm sick of you ignoring what's going on between us!

I'll go with it. I'll go along with it until they keep fighting about the same thing without progress. They have the same fight, with him refusing to listen to her and what she says, about nine times it felt like. They have angry sex, which always makes me uncomfortable. Serafina, when they finally make a relationship breakthrough, manipulates and traps Darius into marriage, and they're off fighting again, which, let me tell you, is really exhausting after pages.

I just felt like Darius and Serafina--especially Serafina--didn't react like normal people. Serafina was attacked, almost kidnapped and almost raped, then, three seconds later, she's completely fine, laughing and spinning around in circles in the rain. I mean, really, girl.

You've just been through a trauma. You can't get over it that quick. I didn't like how Darius thought about Serafina. I mean, I get that he watched her grow up. I get that he's 14 years older than her, and that's okay, I guess. But he doesn't seem to see her. I mean, obviously, since he likes her. Who could like that annoying girl, I ask? He calls her "goddess" and "beauty" and "Angel" and "little" and "pet. He just saw her as this beautiful painting that he wanted to covet, but didn't deserve because she was so gorgeous. I think I'm so disappointed by this book because it has such promise.

It just fell horribly flat. Jun 01, Christine Cagnes rated it really liked it Shelves: Nov 26, K.

Bateman rated it it was amazing. Fun napoleonic-era romance set in an unusual fictional island location. Bad boy bodyguard Darius Santiago and feisty Princess Serafina make an enjoyable team. The author does steamy well. However, the author used the word s-e-x or a variation thereof.

Mary Balogh bandies variations of this word in her regency romances on far too many occasions. I consider once per book to be to often. How I hate seeing that word in a historical romance.

It really has no business being used at all IMHO. Keep the word S-E-X and it's variants out of historical romances! It ruins the illusion. I began to thaw towards the H because he was the victim of a spoiled manipulative twit--the h! Serafina the Princess did something horrible to ensure that they would ultimately end up together. It was terrible and selfish. She could have gotten Darius the H at best killed, at worst castrated and ruin the trust and high regard her father, King Lazar had for him!

It was a nasty piece of work, all to have her way without any regard for the consequences.

I wanted to slap the hair off of her head! Jun 10, RamenGrrl rated it really liked it Shelves: In spite of or maybe because of these things, I still found myself fully engrossed in the story. I enjoyed the evolution of their relationship. What kept this from being 5 stars was really the portrayal of Serafina's parents, for whom I felt a great affection after reading the first book of this trilogy. I realize it's hard to maintain the fully fleshed out characters of on Angsty hero. I realize it's hard to maintain the fully fleshed out characters of one novel when using them as secondary characters in another, but I was disappointed that as parents, Lazar and Allegra were somehow lacking and consequently, Serafina grew up lonely and isolated.

A Pennsylvania native, Gaelen holds a B. It was here, while studying the Romantic poets, such as Wordsworth, Byron, and Keats that she first fell in love with the Regency period in which her novels are set.

Gaelen lives in western Pennsylvania with her college-sweetheart husband, Eric, a schoolteacher, with whom she co-writes middle grade fantasy adventure novels under the pen-name, E. She is hard at work on her next book. Other books in the series. Ascension Trilogy 3 books.

Books by Gaelen Foley. See All Goodreads Deals…. This was particularly true of Lazar who criticized Darius for the same thing he did in book one. Darius was also inconsistent. On the one hand he worshipped Serafina and held her on a pedestal refusing to "go all the way" with her even though she is willing. Then a few scenes later, he just beds her with no expectation of marriage. I also agree with one reviewer who noted that Foley sprinkles her novels with modern words and expressions that just don't fit the s and they really stick out.

Since they aren't needed I can't imagine why they weren't edited out, but oh well. I think Foley has the potential to be a 5 star author but her work needs a master editor as the books tell a great story and contain meaningful action and dialog but somewhere in the middle, issues arise with her plot and characters. Still, it's worth the read and I liked the story line. This has become one of my favorite books of all time and it's surprising because this is the first book that I've ever read by Gaelen Foley. Anybody can write romance novels but not with the skill and aplomb that only a few writers such as Linda Howard, Elizabeth Lowell, and Johanna Lindsey have, who happen to be some of my favorite romance novelists.

This book struck me as an endearing and fascinating read because the main characters, Darius Santiago and Princess Serafina, have such great intellect, honesty, bravery, integrity, strong and admirable personalities, a red-hot attraction to each other and searing love scenes that will melt the pages off, in addition to the kind of love that comes once or twice in a lifetime that most of us would probably envy.

This book has got all the necessary ingredients in a good book: Everything is described in such a picture-perfect way and so eloquently that I couldn't put the book down- the three times that I've read it! Trust me, if you haven't read this book yet, go out there and get yourself a copy! You'd be missing out if you didn't! I would say that Princess is one of the best romance novels ever written and it's earned a permanent place on my shelves for life!
