The cultural gap between Gombo and Serguie seems invincible. But maybe they can learn a few things from each other?
Written by Mattias Thuresson. If you ever wondered how an ordinary life could have been like without constant bombardment of television, ads and all the trappings of a hierarchical society, this movie beautifully depicts the life such a family, in the process of being unconsciously absorbed by the modernity the rest of us are so familiar with. The lead guy's performance as he tries to bemusedly make sense of the city and its services and warez is very touching. Its sad to see a strong, capable, independent soul finely tuned to the nature he is part of being slowly displaced by the "greater" civilisation, but its also an uplifting narrative of escapisim to a place where the contradictions and pretensions of the organised society does not exist.

It's the story of Irish immigrant Maggie O'Brien who goes to work as a chambermaid at the famous Jekyll Island Club and falls in love with Hector Deliyannis, a Greek immigrant and waiter at the club. McCash says she got the idea for her story when she became intrigued by two graves in the historic duBignon cemetery on Jekyll Island. George Harvey and Hector Deliyannis died on the same day - March 21, Through her research, McCash discovered that Hector personal waiter to the J.
Morgan family drowned in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue his fellow waiter George Harvey.
And it's so much more than a love story. Maggie's grief at losing her beloved Hector is only the beginning of the challenges and triumphs that will face her as the years unfold. It's a book women will appreciate, but men should read, too, if, for no other reason, than to gain increased empathy for what some women have had to endure.
I highly recommend it. Aug 30, Morgan James rated it liked it. Though I felt some of the writing was not as well done as I'd hoped, and parts of the plot were predictable,as I moved into the book, I began to care about Maggie and wanted to finish her story. In the final analysis, what more can a writer ask for?
Initially, I picked up the book to experience more of Jekyll Island, Georgia.
McCash's descriptions of the island and its people at the turn of the twentieth century felt grounded and well researched. I just wish she'd spent more time on Jekyll and l Though I felt some of the writing was not as well done as I'd hoped, and parts of the plot were predictable,as I moved into the book, I began to care about Maggie and wanted to finish her story. I just wish she'd spent more time on Jekyll and less in New York. All in all, Eden is a good summer read. Make sure you have a hankie close by.
Jun 10, Tyra rated it really liked it. This is a local author and was recommended by a friend. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It's an historical fiction novel set in the s and follows the history of Jekyll Island as well as American history through the eyes of the main character, Maggie. It's both sad and intriguing.
The only negative I found is that the author often "told" rather than "showed" the reader the unfolding drama. Other than that, I'd highly recommend it. Sep 29, Donna rated it liked it. Straightforward writing which relates the story of a young girl who leaves her Irish homeland in the early s to seek new experiences and a new life in America. Her life story unfolds in a tale that is a little schmaltzy but nonetheless works. My three star rating translates to "an enjoyable historical fiction simply but adequately told with no major flaws in plot or writing.
Nov 10, Mary Stanton rated it it was amazing.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. I purchased this book on a trip to Jekyll Island and read it during the week. It was well written and was one of those books you can't put down. Feb 01, Kathy rated it it was amazing.
Especially if you've ever been to Jekyll Island, GA. You just feel yourself there. May Book Club pick Vicki G. Easy and fairly entertaining book. It did feel long as it spans across several generations, and becomes highly predictable.
Probably chosen for Book Club because of future visit to the Jekyll Island area St Simon's by the group in September , and because author is considered "local"; author paints good panoramas of island area, even though most of the story develops in New York.
Oct 04, Nancy Day rated it really liked it Shelves: Only read this for book club, but it was really touching! Mar 04, Melissa rated it did not like it. It starts of interesting. And then gets predictable. The writing style is very juvenile. While I appreciate the historical elements, that's pretty much all this book is good for. After starting it, I would only read it before bed because it would put me to sleep.
Feb 05, Emily rated it liked it Shelves: While there, she falls in love with a waiter and their love affair changes the oath of her life. You see her entire life, from age 18 to her death--it's not focused on a specific historical event, but on Maggie's reactions to the historical events of her time. I have a personal connection to Jekyll Island, so I greatly enjoyed reading the descriptions of it.
