The Living Blood is a novel by writer Tananarive Due. It is the second book in Due's African Immortals Series. It is preceded by My Soul to Keep, which was. In THE LIVING BLOOD, this young writer opens up realms of experience that add to our storehouse of shared reality, and by doing so widens our common vision.
Measuring the Human Heart. Functions of the Blood: Blood is a living fluid. It transports oxygen and other essential substances throughout the body, fights sickness, and performs other vital functions. Below are 8 important facts about blood.
Because of these living cells suspended in the plasma, blood is considered a fluid connective tissue not a fluid. It is the only fluid tissue in the body. Blood Transports Nutrients and Hormones Blood plays a large role in digestion and endocrine system functions. Digested nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through capillaries in the villi that line the small intestine.
These nutrients include glucose, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Blood also transports some hormones secreted by endocrine system glands to target organs and tissues. Blood Regulates Body Temperature Blood absorbs and distributes heat throughout the body.
It helps to maintain homeostasis through the release or conservation of warmth. Blood vessels expand and contract when they react to outside organisms, such as bacteria, and to internal hormone and chemical changes.
These actions move blood and heat closer to or farther from the skin surface, where heat is lost. Platelets Clot Blood at Sites of Injury. Dec 04, Villager rated it really liked it. I truly enjoyed the 2nd book of the 'African Immortals' series by Tananarive Due. I suspect that this would be a good story for the big screen at some point. I think this is the 3rd or 4th book by Due that I've read and I've enjoyed each one of them. I'm not much of a 'horror' fan Anyhow, I do recommend this book to y'all Mar 24, Miri Castor rated it really liked it Shelves: WOW, had no idea that such a talented, amazing black female fantasy author existed besides Octavia!
Truly enjoyed this book, but some POVs were not that interesting to me.
But overall, I have to say this is a favorite for me. Mar 08, Kristy rated it really liked it. Man, I just crawled into this book and camped out a few days. Can't wait to read the third book. I was so captivated by this that I am convinced there should be a movie trilogy to go along with the books. Nov 28, Kimberly rated it it was amazing. The Living Blood is one of my favorite books. I began it apprehensively because I don't typically enjoy science fiction, save Octavia Butler's Kindred, but this is so much more, like Kindred, than science fiction.
It's a complex story of love, relationships and the meaning of mortality. Nov 08, Mykal younge rated it it was amazing. Mar 12, Megalion rated it really liked it Shelves: See comments on book 1. Feb 25, Thomas rated it really liked it Shelves: I wasn't quite prepared for it to start slightly before the ending and carry us through the events of that ending in more detail. It's almost like the prologue for this book was swapped with the epilogue for the first one, the way it all fits together. The good news is that this isn't a bad thing.
My Soul to Keep ended in such a way as to suggest it was the start to a series, and The Living Blood shows us more behind Dawit's culture, and how Jessica fits into modern society as a new part of that culture. It's brilliantly paired with a single widower searching for Jessica as the miracle cure for his son, who is dying of leukemia. Due takes us through the heartache and turmoil of having a sick child, and having to make the decision to leave that child behind to find a cure, knowing he may die before he can return.
It's harrowing in a way that's not usually seen in standard horror. The story here is more expansive, and feels more epic, than My Soul to Keep. I enjoyed that book, but The Living Blood gives it more depth to make it more important, more significant. Soul looks at the idea of immortal Africans on a personal level, while Blood looks at it from a larger perspective.
The two books together make a nice duology, which will make for interesting reading since there are two more books in this series. I can see this book appealing to a wide audience -- horror readers, fantasy readers, even readers of alternate history -- and it's easy to see that its roots lie in horror, but Due rises above the tropes of the genre with this book. It even has hints of the scope of A Song of Ice and Fire, especially if she continues down the path she's forged here. I'll be an eager reader of the rest of the series. Second in a series of four that I ate up pretty quickly. Fana has particularly strong gifts and she isn't able to control them very well, she is only three after all.
I read this on ebook so to say page turner mightn't be quite right, but it was a swipe until the wee hours read, as were the others in the series.
Very enjoyable, a fascinating concept. It only took me so long because of procrastination, not because it was a difficult read. Once I actually sat down with it, I flew through it. A cast of characters that span just about every skin color. Almost like it reflects real life people. Feb 04, Kenneth Walker rated it it was amazing.
Just as good as the first! Aug 23, Regina Miller rated it it was amazing. I love her books but haven't found anything by her after the living blood series. I read Joplins Ghost by her also and loved it. I have not been to sleep at a decent hour since starting this series! Excited I have two more books to go!!
Sep 29, Reese rated it really liked it. Really enjoyed reading this book a few years ago. I will be ordering it again for a do over.
That's when the magic will happen. With a 2nd reading.. I wonder what I missed. Feb 18, Karen rated it it was amazing. Totally enthralled with this story line and this authors writing. Book 3 is in hand! Jun 22, Maya rated it liked it Shelves: I'm seriously worried the protagonist is going to have a heart attack.
I feel my own heart rate increasing just reading her story. I'm going to have to get on meds if this continues! This one really gets the heart racing! It continues the story of Jessica and David, along with their daughter Fana. It takes you into the refuge of the immorta About halfway through. It takes you into the refuge of the immortal Africans: I'm not going to write what you can read on the book jacket.
Instead, here's some random thoughts: For a bookworm, that's a rare and wonderful pleasure. That's a good thing. It also sometimes felt like I'd never get through the book. OK, that's also a good thing. Whenever a book makes you feel, it's a sign of strength. But I really was so worried about the main characters. I cared about them and, thank goodness, it basically turned out OK.
If it hadn't, I'd have been really mad at the author. Jul 12, Melody rated it liked it. Did you ever get one of those book chain mails? Well I followed through with three of them and this was the only book I got out of the three separate claims that I would get thousands of books mailed to my house. I only tell you this because this was not a book I would have picked out.
It has set on a shelf for 7 years and I grabbed it to take on vacation with me in case I finished Cloud Atlas which I did. Kind of like vampires without the Did you ever get one of those book chain mails? Kind of like vampires without the sucking. Their blood will heal people. One of the immortals gets married to a mortal. Well I think a lot of the immortals married mortals — because for some unknown reason only black men are immortals. But anyway this particular immortal decides that he wants his wife and child to be an immortal too. She then starts a clinic where she injects sick African children with her blood and miraculously heals them.
Another story is also developing. A man whose wife just recently died of cancer is determined that his son, who has recently been diagnosed with leukemia, will not die. He reads about this clinic in Africa and sets off to plead with the woman for some blood to save his son. He does this even though his son could die while he is out of the country.
Very entertaining with just enough suspense thrown in. Sep 01, Neringa rated it really liked it. This is the second book of the African Immortals series. Same as the first book, the sequel is well written, a real page-turner! We learn more about the living blood and its origin.
Many more mysteries about the blood brothers are revealed. Some readers have commented that it is possible to start reading from the second book, as the past events are explained quite in detail; they play an important role to the main characters of the story. Jessica is still haunted by the past, she tries to learn t This is the second book of the African Immortals series. Jessica is still haunted by the past, she tries to learn to forgive her husband David. She is also learning how to live with the gift that was given to her and what to do with it.
Jessica tries to help people but quickly learns that she cannot save all of them and that not everybody is willing to ask nicely for her help Jessica is still suffering from the loss of her first daughter Kira and at the same time she is struggling to raise Fana, a very special child. As the girl is growing older weird and unexplainable things start happening around her.
And even worse, in her dreams she meets something dark that seeks their own goals and Fana is not sure she is able to control them. This is a story of a family and a tragedy, parenting, desperation, religion and human nature. I would say that this book has a better developed story and more complex characters and it is much darker than My Soul to Keep.
