There are few review books covering the writing part of the GRE and I took a chance and bought this one, based on a few good reviews. That turned out to be the wrong decision. This book is an unhelpful collection of different concepts that have been compiled together rather than an actual plan or how-to guide for the GRE.
I am guessing the style this book was written in has a lot to do with the author's personality: I am the opposite: This book does not provide a step-by-step template on how to write a good essay for the GRE and it is difficult to apply it to any kind of writing practice for the GRE. I would not get this book even as a supplementary review book.
I would recommend any of the other major test prep companies' Kaplan's, Barron's, Princeton Review's essay approach found in their general review books over this book. I found the Princeton Review's approach especially helpful, as they provided a sample template for each type of essay. A new writing section, ah!
However, this book put my anxieties at ease.
It is short and to the point. I did not really need it to brush up on punctuation or grammar - but all that information is there. What I really found most helpful were all the examples of sample essays.
To receive a high score on the GRE writing section, you need to structure your essays a certain way - this book shows you how to do that. Writing section topics for your specific test will be picked from a pool of topics - this book covers all the major ones with its sample essays.
Excellent tool for anyone preparing to take the GRE and needs brushing up or learning for the first time the skills needed to pass this somewhat challenging test. My friend took the GRE and got this a while back. He said and it's why I listened , if I needed to learn specific writing approaches and would read for patterns and logic, it'd be super clear.
So ideally, you should be able to connect your ideas properly to the central theme or idea of the essay, and convince the reader to agree to your point of view. In order to make your essay sound reasonable and logically sound, you will obviously need to provide sufficient evidences. You will often find that the AWA arguments cite statistical evidence to support their claims. In order to assess the merits of a certain situation, it is essential to have full knowledge of all contributing factors. If you are an internet geek, you would probably agree that sometimes, internet strangers are really helpful in nature. This is really essential in these days of email and text messaging, where most of the younger population use chat language and shortened forms of words like lyk, hw, wat, imma etc.
All I know is this- I am glad I spent the time and the money. I have never bought such a good book. If you are preparing for the GRE. This is the perfect book.
