We each belong to and are needed in the family of God. Is anything more beautiful and profound than the simple and pure truths of the gospel taught in a Primary song? And all of you Primary girls here tonight know the song I am going to talk about. You learned it for your Primary program last year.
The first line of the song teaches: Our mortal journey to earth did not change those truths. Earthly families all look different. And while we do the best we can to create strong traditional families, membership in the family of God is not contingent upon any kind of status—marital status, parental status, financial status, social status, or even the kind of status we post on social media.
The second line of the song expands on the first.
In the premortal life, we learned that we would need a period of mortality. These have not been my stretching opportunities. And in addition, I have experienced all of the mortal tests that I just mentioned through the lens of a daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Our opportunity as covenant-keeping daughters of God is not just to learn from our own challenges; it is to unite in empathy and compassion as we support other members of the family of God in their struggles, as we have covenanted to do.
When we do so, we also come to understand and trust that the Savior knows the difficulties of the way and can guide us through whatever sorrows and disappointments may come. When she welcomed me into her home, the first thing I noticed was the variety of framed family and missionary photos on her walls and tables.
We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife. We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children.
Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live.
Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations. The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity.
Things are not turning out the way I wanted, hoped, and dreamed they would. I know unequivocally that you are a daughter of God. He knows you, He loves you, and He has a plan for you. I know this is a message Heavenly Father wants me to share with you. Latter-day prophets and apostles testify of our divine natures. And President Gordon B.
Hinckley has also said:. Your Eternal Father is the great Master of the universe. He rules over all, but He also will listen to your prayers as His daughter and hear you as you speak with Him. He will answer your prayers. As you let the knowledge that you are a daughter of God settle deep into your soul, it will comfort you, strengthen your faith, and influence your conduct. Heavenly Father loves us and wants to help us remember Him, so He provides for us glimpses into eternity.
The Spirit gives us glimpses into who we are. Moses learned who he was through a powerful spiritual experience. After having this experience, Moses was then buffeted by Satan. The same pattern applies to us. As we come to know and feel who we really are, we are enabled to recognize the difference between good and evil and are empowered to resist temptation. One of the ways we can come to understand the divinely appointed mission the Lord has for us is through our patriarchal blessings.
These are very specific and individual messages we can each receive by the power of the priesthood.
Experiencing the Father's Love: Learning to Live As Sons and Daughters of Our Heavenly Fatherby Os Hillman, pages, paperback – Learn more. “When God thinks of you, love swells in his heart.”. Os Hillman lost his father at age Os shares many personal experiences and insights from others who contribute to a greater understanding of what it means to experience our Heavenly Father’s love.
Another way to receive spiritual insights about our own eternal natures is from a parent or a leader who can reassure us because of his or her inspired glimpses into who we really are. The Spirit has whispered very specifically to me on occasion about the true identity of my children. I remember the night before one of our babies was born I had the distinct impression that this baby would be a great friend and helper with each of its siblings.
Such glimpses have come again and again to me. All children can benefit from the love that typifies the perfect example of the Savior. I can honestly say that I never heard a word of complaint from the girls! They were flourishing in a sweet spirit of mutual acceptance that is not often present among teenage girls. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. In the premortal life, we learned that we would need a period of mortality. These are very specific and individual messages we can each receive by the power of the priesthood.
This has proved to be absolutely true. Another time when one of our teenagers was very downcast because of involvement in an automobile accident, I distinctly heard these words in my mind: Such glimpses have come again and again to me. When they have needed encouragement, I have been blessed with insights into the great and noble eternal spirits of my children. What do they mean by that? They must do these things because they wear that name tag, an outward sign of their identity. His name should be engraven inwardly upon our hearts.
When I was called to serve you, the young women of this Church, I knew I had to behave appropriately.
