That makes me think that the dictionary is designed for Portuguese-speaking learners of English. I am an English speaker studying Portuguese. As I come across words in Portuguese whose meaning I need to look up, many of them are not in this volume. When I look them up on the Web, and get the meaning, I then frequently find the English word in this dictionary with the corresponding Portuguese word I was originally looking for. This is not the way a bilingual dictionary is supposed to work.
The selection of words is good. Everyday language and high frequency words is the focus. However, the definitions are often disappointing. Too often they include only the most common translations. In different contexts, the word would have a different meaning and a different translation. The binding is good and while paperback, the dictionary will withstand a lot of use. An appendix to the book contains 80 conjugated Portuguese verbs.
This could be a useful reference if the verbs were in alphabetical order. On the other hand, within the dictionary each Portuguese verb is followed by a number. That number corresponds to the number of the verb in the appendix that follows the same format in the way it is conjugated in the various tenses.
Otherwise, there is no way to find them other than turning pages in the appendix. Even when you do that, it is difficult. I bought this for a friend from Portugal. She said so many Portuguese to English dictionaries are very limited and she needed one with a lot more vocabulary. She loves this one! Purchased as a gift. Recipient was very happy with it. Quick perusal suggests it's a great dictionary for its price range.
One person found this helpful. Good side, good price, excellent information! The font is not small at all, it is a very good dictionary! I recommend this for portuguese and english speakers!
Great reference and helps to learn the language. This is so handy. I had an earlier one that was much smaller and the text was too tiny to see.
But I lost that one in a recent move and so I bought this larger one. I spent some years in Brazil and learned the language and it it great to quickly look up a word in either language. Glad I bought it. While it doesn't say so on the cover or in the description on Amazon, this dictionary is pretty much limited to Brazilian Portuguese with regard to vocabulary and phonetics, and was of practically no help to me in reading a novel from Portugal. Taking Portuguese classes in Brazil I needed a default reference to fall back on.
As they have for so many years, Oxford provided that solution. Has already been used many times and will be in the future. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. It was the scholars of the Portuguese Renaissance that compiled some of the first interlingua dictionaries and literary works, able to do so because of the great distribution of the Portuguese Empire. Because of the great prestige and importance of the Portuguese Renaissance on nautical studies and sciences, most explorers of the time studied in Portugal and carried the Portuguese language to newly discovered lands.
The Cancioneiro Geral , by Garcia de Resende. The Portuguese Renaissance was a golden age for literary works in Portugal.
The abundance of funds and interest lead to the creation of some of the best known pieces of the Portuguese language. Because of Portugal's importance during the Age of Discovery and strategic location as a waypoint between Europe and the rest of the world, many of these literary works were able to circulate outside of Portugal and achieve popularity throughout Europe.
In , Garcia de Resende published the Cancioneiro General , which contained more than two hundred separate literary works, of various authors, from the reigns of D. Afonso V and D. From until , Gil Vicente wrote and staged forty one pieces of drama, both in Portuguese and Castilian, including mysteries, farces, comedies, and tragedies, which would earn him a space in history as the "Father of Iberian drama". During the Portuguese Renaissance, chivalric romances were a literary phenomenon of the Iberian Peninsula, and of Europe as a whole, to a lesser extent.
These novels based themselves on the idealization of mediaeval chivalric codes, and were filled with princes and princesses, knights and damsels, and almost always had a Christian moral.
