Sophfronia grew up in Lorain, Ohio, a hometown she shares with author Toni Morrison. Her father was a Mississippi-born steelworker who never learned how to read and her mother was a stay-at-home mom who always made sure there were books in the house. Sophfronia spent a big chunk of her career as a writer and editor for Time and People magazines where she developed the uncanny ability to create order out of chaos by whittling massive amounts of facts and ideas into a single cohesive form.

Please try again later. Average read, same advice you hear over and over. I do not recommend. I couldn't even finish reading this book. The best book you can buy to show one how to overcome fear. The author uses simple words, I perfectly know this was intentionally thought so that it would be easy to understand by anyone.

I really enjoyed this book and found it was particularly helpful, especially in a crowded market of self-help books. A few things really set it apart. First, I loved that there were lots and lots of experts who contributed. I liked this for two main reasons. First, the many different perspectives were really valuable.

If one person's story didn't resonate strongly with me, another two or three or four did. The editor really did a great job of gathering people as different as Jack Canfield and Donald Trump to contribute wonderful and diverse essays. Secondly, I also really enjoy hearing successful people being honest about what has scared them or challenged them in the past. Unfortunately, I think a lot of modern media is either about trashing someone or glorifying them.

I want to hear about -- and learn from -- the really human side of people's lives rather than just viewing celebrities from a pedestal or in the gutter. The book definitely made me feel that I wasn't alone in feeling afraid and powerless at times. Finally, this was a really FUN read. It was breezy and fast without sacrificing real depth.

The moderate length of the essays made them perfect for a busy person like myself, but again they were completely full of substance and heart. Almost all of them left me inspired. I heartily recommend this book. Not only will you enjoy it, you will also learn from it too. After sampling the book using Amazon's "Look Inside" feature, I realized that this is a promotional tool for various professional speakers, business trainers, self-help authors, and life coaches.

Can I use this book in every day life? Will it help me in business; does the author discuss the spiritual aspects of fear?

Will I come away with a sense that the book is well written, thought out, and I can use it as a guild to help family, friends, business acquaintances, young people, and myself? For the price, it was more than worth what I paid for it. She discussed losing her job, not that she was not "qualified or not being a team player", it's "the bottom lie", economics.

She stated fear is invisible, it takes your energy, it stops you in your tracks, yet you cannot let fear rob you of your dreams. We all have dreams, we know that to achieve our dreams, sometimes, we have to walk through that dark valley, we know it as fear.

We cannot touch it, but we feel it, it holds us sometimes like a vice. Valarie goes on to tell you how friendships helped her to deal with her situation, loss of job, and what she was going to do. Slowly she started to move forward, after her pity-party, she began to do something every day, for example taking a walk. Having something definite to do. One of her girlfriends called every day to talk, and helped her realize what she wanted to do.

Out of those early morning discussions came, her first book. She state some times you have to speak works out loud, into the brain, to let fear know, you are not owning it today. She became a national keynote speaker for major organizations. These things would not have happen had Valarie not lost her position.

Blessings come in many ways, after we subdue our fears, we are able to think clearly, and know we will survive and thrive. I definitely recommend reading this book! I would typically be a little skeptical to read a "self-help" book, but I took a chance on the fact that I figured I could learn a thing or two from so many different authors. It's a fast read - the authors were succinct and to the point within their chapters which was a huge plus for me. No one wants to read the same thing over and over again, so it was nice that each of the chapters had a different writing style and perspective to change things up a bit.

In particular, I found that the following chapters stood out to me the most: The Key to Conquering Fear: Sandie Glass Fighting Fear with Fear: Donald Trump In essense, all of these writers had experienced fear at some point in their lives whether it be at work, personal life, etc. The authors give their readers ways to confront their fear and how to turn it into something productive. I recently decided to make a job change, doing something similar to what I am doing now, but opening myself up to a multitude of other areas in my field.

It's really scary to leave a job that you're so comfortable in "can I make it somewhere else?

How the Fierce Handle Fear

And you know what, I don't think I would have gone ahead with it unless I read this book and really thought about what I was so scared of. I actually made the final decision this week and I can't tell you how invigoring it feels to move forward! Sometimes it's the silly things that hold you back -- read this book and that kick fear to the curb!
