Lighting a fragrant candle can send a signal to our brains: Listening to music can help us focus on God.
Many people enjoy doodling, drawing, or painting while they pray. I help my ADHD-plagued brain focus on prayer by keeping a prayer journal. Making a list of requests keeps my mind alert; I stop to pray for each petition after jotting it down. Occasionally I write out longer prayers like a letter. My best prayer times happen out on the walking trail. Praying aloud also helps me keep my mind engaged, but I save that for prayer times at home.
This verse baffles me: How about trying an experiment? Start and end your day with prayer. Lift up short prayers to God as often as you can throughout your day.
Pray over your schedule. Ask God to help you with your to-do list. When you hear a troubling news report, lift the situation up to God. In fact, this short prayer is an outstanding model of some basic attitudes we need for effective prayer. Prayer depends on this attitude of neediness before God, expressed beautifully in the prayer from Scripture, above. This attitude is one of humility and basic faith. It looks with confidence to God as the only source that can fulfill our needs and desires.
That was the wrong attitude. A long the way, in the last 20 years, God has shown me that He can do anything from healing a cut to selling a business. I remember the first time I really wanted to pray, but I thought my words were not good enough, not theological enough, not deep enough. Then, when Jesus became not only my Saviour but my Friend, things started to change. I pray out loud.
I have prayed over other people asking God to intercede. I have asked for healing. Prayed for strength, peace, calmness, inspiration. If you are beginning your prayer life you want to practice first. Start by saying hello to God. Thank God for welcoming you into His Kingdom. Then acknowledge that He is Lord of your life and you want to learn more from Him. Confess anything that you think is holding you back from a good relationship.
In addition, perseverance is necessary for learning how to pray. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. How about getting started today? A long the way, in the last 20 years, God has shown me that He can do anything from healing a cut to selling a business. The Bible refuses to give us one small, simple picture or pattern for prayer. I have prayed over other people asking God to intercede.
Ask and accept His forgiveness. In order to feel secure and confident in Who God is, start to build a list of good prayer scriptures.
