My review copy was graciously provided free of charge by the author. But do not, for one second, think that is why I am giving this collection such a rave review. Let me say right up front: Then I read further. Here is what she said: There are very few short story collections available for young readers and one advantage to reading them as ebooks is that a parent in a crowded waiting room or stuck in traffic can hand their cranky child their smartphone with a funny story instead of Angry Birds.
I also love the ability to provide entertainment to the kids on the go that things like Angry Birds provides. But I LOVE that someone is out there putting together alternatives to games as a means of doing this. The stories are, in a word, delightful. They are fun, engaging, hilarious, revenge-filled without ever being vengeful.
They are cute and heart-warming and contain hidden life-lessons about being a good friend, being honest and trustworthy, and being loving. And they are written in a very easy-going and altogether compelling style that appeals to me as a reader, a step-parent, and someone who is more than occasionally worried that the future of our world is in the hands of kids whose main introductions to reading are video game manuals. I strongly encourage you to pick this one up and throw it on your phone, ipad, whatever… You — and the kids in your life — will be exceedingly glad you did!
Dec 20, Heidi rated it really liked it Shelves: I believe this is the first book I have ever read where the character telling the story is a bird. This surprises me a little because it really is a fabulous idea.
Yohalem brings Bird to life wonderfully. I found myself laughing my way through each of the six stories in this book. One of the things that makes it funny is the fact that Bird himself seems so clueless as to why Grandpa hates him, but the reader figures it out very quickly. The second reason the book is funny is of course the way Bi I believe this is the first book I have ever read where the character telling the story is a bird.
The second reason the book is funny is of course the way Bird responds to the situations in which he finds himself, such as playing dead he is very good at this. This book would make for a fun read-a-loud and could easily be used to teach point-of-view and visualization. Clearly Bird's and Grandpa's views are very different. While I routed for Bird through all the stories, one can't help but feel compassion for Grandpa at times. There were a couple of things that concerned me a little bit.
First, the title, the word 'hates' in the title is a little off putting, at least for me. I thought that maybe Grandpa versus the Bird would perhaps be a better title, but that could just be me. Hates doesn't really convey humor to me. Luckily it didn't stop me from reading and enjoying the book. The other thing I noticed was the writing seemed awkward in a few spots, once again it wasn't enough to stop me from reading and enjoying the book. For me, writing becomes awkward when it pulls me out of the story enough that I stop and ponder the word choice or phrasing. Usually once I get used to the phrasing the author likes to use, I can get passed it not always, but generally , but only if the characters and plot interest me, which in this case they did.
Overall, I recommend this book to those who enjoy humorous stories about pets, I did really enjoy it and plan to share parts of it with some of my students. Take a look at the author's website for more information.

I requested this book trough the Librarything member giveaway program simply because the title and the image where hilarious already. The description given and the fact that it was a children's book made it even more interesting. And it was interesting. The stories are very amusing, some points even hilarious.
This book is not only fun for children but an entertaining read for adults too. You get the stories from Bird's point of view, showing that he is a bit naughty but has his heart on the right place. The human characters are pinpointed to a few characteristics but still you get attached to them easily. This book really should be translated to my native language so I can advice it to all the parents around me as a must have. Mar 27, Emily rated it it was amazing. Grandpa hates the bird Author: Eve Yohalem Published By: Amazon digital services Genre: Something that will break into what may be a boring typical day or just when you need a good laugh.
This book definitely did that f Book Title: This book definitely did that for me. The author took the time to not only get the perfect little imperfections down with the pet but, also with Grandpa. The pet being known and called only the Bird which he explains how he got that name as well. To the present day moment.
It left me wanting more and to read more about this adorable seeming co existence between the grandparent and the grand kids pet. You even get to see what grandpa really prefers as a pet. It certainly brightened my day. Jan 23, Steph rated it it was amazing.
I loved how this story was written from Bird's point of view. As a petowner, I wish that I could know what was running through their brains at various intervals of the day. Poor Bird cannot understand why Grandpa hates him, but it is obvious to me that Bird just doesn't understand the ways of the human world.
However, I did find myself laughing almost entirely throughout the book from reading all of Bird's little antics. I couldn't have asked for a more adorable book.
Dec 03, Loony Gryphon rated it it was amazing Shelves: Bird will surely make you laugh, as for Grandpa, I can't help but feel sorry for him. Bird should really try to be nicer to Grandpa, since if it wasn't for Grandpa and Grandma , he wouldn't have the family that he loves so much. The last short little story is my favorite. A quick enough read that will bring a smile to your face and more than a few laughs. Feb 03, Kathy rated it really liked it. The stories are from the point of view of the Bird and how he sees us humans and how he always seems to get the upper hand when dealing with grandpa.
