Thirty years ago, the Miners' Strike threatened to tear the country apart, turning neighbour against neighbour - enmities which smoulder still. Resnick had run an information-gathering unit at the heart of the dispute. Now, in retirement, and grieving over the death of his partner, the discovery of the body of a woman who disappeared during the Strike brings Resnick back, and forces him to confront his past.

Good plots and interesting characters including the likeable main protagonist. I will read more of them. In many ways this book is a five-star, but there was less in this book about Resnick's personal life, and since I have a crush on him, I can give it only a four star. You do learn a lot about other characters in the book, which is great.

Harvey sometimes will break up a chapter by including two or three paragraph vignettes abuot what a character is doing or thinking at a particular moment. These vignettes, sometimes written back-to-back give you great insight into the characters and Spoiler alert! These vignettes, sometimes written back-to-back give you great insight into the characters and allow you to have a broad sweep of everyone's moods and attitudes, a snapshot of humanity in Nottingham.

This book also contained a subplot about a hapless and increasingly disturbed young man, Raymond Cooke. You don't know until the very end why Harvey is including his story in this book. He is only on the edges of the story about the kidnapping, because he discovers the body of the first kidnap victim. But at the end he has a violent and tragic intersection with one of my favorites, DC Patel. I'm wondering if Cooke will be in the next book and if the murder will be uncovered.

Charlie Resnick knows that slow and steady is what actually may win the race, or at least finish it most successfully. This particular race is finished with some happy as well as some very sad moments. There are some of those musical allusions that always confound me such as 'Hands that attacked tunes from corners, oblique and disarranged. Jun 12, Jeanne rated it did not like it.
