However, with the urban sprawl and increase in the amount of construction in the midth century, particularly the increase in public housing in major cities in the United States and Europe in the s and s, certain problems with fire escapes became clear. In the poorer areas of cities like Chicago and New York , fire escapes were commonly used for everything but their intended purpose. In the hot summer months, residents of mid-rise apartment buildings would sleep outside on the platforms of their fire escapes.

Such a situation triggered the plot premise of Cornell Woolrich 's short story , "The Boy Cried Murder", about a boy on a fire escape who one night witnesses a murder in a neighboring apartment; this story was filmed as the suspense thriller The Window The practice of sleeping on fire escapes can also be seen in Alfred Hitchcock 's movie Rear Window also based on a Woolrich short story , as well as Weegee 's photography of the Lower East Side. Diagonal shadows of fire escapes made them a constant motif in film noir , and the balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet was transposed to a fire escape for the musical West Side Story.

The installation of window air conditioners in individual apartment units with fire escape-facing windows, often installed against code or local ordinance by residents, [4] which require the unit to be affixed to the window sash, also make a fire escape nearly useless in the summer months; the bulk and weight of an air conditioner unit shoved onto or over a fire escape in an emergency also creates additional danger for firefighters and evacuees.

Boston Herald American photographer Stanley Forman won a Pulitzer Prize for the photograph Fire Escape Collapse capturing two girls plunging from a faulty fire escape during a Boston fire, and the controversial image resulted in tougher fire safety codes in some jurisdictions. As buildings are built taller and taller, new fire escape ideas have been gaining popularity. Elevators, though traditionally not used as fire escapes, are now being thought of as a possible evacuation for high-rises and skyscrapers.

Both the IBC and IRC require emergency escape and rescue openings for residential buildings of 4 floors or less, in sleeping rooms and basements with habitable space, for means of emergency egress. A fire escape can be a window, and if above the first floor with an approved ladder, or door that leads to a porch with ground access or a fire escape ladder. The fire escape is often regarded as one of the important symbols in the drama The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. Its name is said to be "a touch of accidental poetic truth, for all of these huge buildings are always burning with the slow and implacable fires of human desperation".

Tom, the character most intertwined with the fire-escape, appears on it more often than others. In most of his appearances on the fire-escape, he is moving out of the apartment, a gesture showing his yearnings to venture into the outside world, escaping troubles at home. You can tell by the condition of the earpieces and trim whether they were abused or lightly used and forgotten about. The latter are what I try to go after. They're valuable today because they are considered to be the best sounding equipment ever made, even to the point that it's being compared to audio equipment in production today.

If you are looking at three digits, those old receivers are the best value available. But some of the new stuff is unbelievable.

I can't even do brakes on my car for that much. I have a and a I grabbed when my grandmother downsized her living space and I was flabbergasted when I looked up their value for fun one day online. Also - dead simple stuff, that's a mighty big box for something that fits in a watch nowadays If it was dead simple it would be a single ended class A with no feedback amplifier, which it isn't. Same goes for tone controllers and radio. I have a Perraux class A amp, stereo, no volume control, no nothing, just two channels of cabinet baking amplification. So, yeah, my dad's Marantz was an impressive piece of kit, as it should have been for the price: By the s the pots were going dirty, otherwise it would have lasted an absurdly long time.

Not sure what your point is, and I don't how old your amplifier is.

But most things like for example Marantz's old amplifier are built to last much longer through usage of better capasitors etc than most modern amplifiers. How simple the topology isn't alone an indicator of how long it lasts and how large the error rate is. According to what I read, only a few of todays the amplifier and similar eletronics are built to last, but they tend be overpriced if you just compare things like design, features, sound quality to cheaper amplifiers, which in turn fail more often.

Not sure I had a point - the Perraux is, still, a rock solid amplifier - efficient?

But, there's very little in there to go wrong. The thing that bugs me about modern "class D" kit is the total lack of attention people seem to pay to the noise floor. Get one in a quiet room and the speakers hiss - louder than my air-conditioning vents Well the perraux is probably a push pull type, which still makes a lot of difference. Judging from the amount of heat it puts off at idle, I wouldn't be too shocked if it's straight up class A.

Welcome to Reddit,

It's a deep rack mount thing about 5" tall, heat sinks down both sides, and they get toasty. Looking at this, I couldn't help but think that the ad is pretty imbalanced from a composition standpoint. The placement of the main image, especially right next to the photo of the undamaged device.

I think this would have looked much better and more balanced. I agree, the placement of the image is a little quirky when it's placed next to the selling model. I had that exact model. It was my dad's before he handed it down to me. I used it through elementary school, high school, and college and beyond, until I accidentally left it behind when moving. Just seeing the picture in the ad brings back a flood of memories. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. AdPorn comments other discussions 3.
