The Practice Manager, Joy, remembers the hearts Scott broke when he last worked there- and also his abrupt departure-and refuses to work with him. So Joy leaves, and Scott slips seamlessly into the Practice routine. It's the middle of a long, sultry summer, and the heat is getting to the inhabitants of Barleybridge But when she sees him, she is shocked to discover things aren't that simple. Keen to settle into his new job and make a good impression, he embraces life as a country vet, and is soon dealing with an assortment of cases. I may or may not read the third in the series -- not because I'm invested in the storylines, but because I always have this weird compulsion to finish series that I start. I need to learn to let them go!

It keeps you reading and guessing just what is going to happen next. I love how the author has incorporated the lives of the farmers with the veteriarians. You get to know the farmers and the veterinarians on a personal basis and come to feel for what they endeavor. Can't wait to read the 3rd in the series. Mar 20, Krisz rated it really liked it.

Country Wives

Rebecca Shaw writes interesting books about interesting, yet nothing special characters. It makes a peaceful, light reading and I will search out her other novels too. This is the second of her writings I have read, the first being Talk of the Village, and that genuinely surprised me with its clear and enjoyable voice. Country wives was the same.

I wish it was longer though, and I didn't feel the title had anything to do with the contents. Rebecca Shaw delves deeper into the lives of the Barleybridge residents and you become more involved and invested as a result. As a child, I spent five years in James Harriot country. I recognized the speech and the scenery in both the books and the movies.

I didn't get this book at all.

Everything about this book felt so forced and contrived. I wasn't expecting another Harriot series, but I was expecting quite a bit more than this book delivered. Jun 03, Rosemary rated it really liked it. I haven't enjoyed reading about village life since the last of the Miss Read books, all of which I've read.

It's great to know that Rebecca Shaw has created two villages, and has 15 or more books on village life in England.

Barleybridge

I anticipate enjoyable reading for the next year or more. Oct 01, Betty Bell rated it really liked it. Country Wives is centered around a Veterinary practice in Barleybridge England. It's a small village where everyone knows their neighbors. The story is delightfully warm, engaging and filled with the joys of small town life. Jan 09, Kathy rated it really liked it. An enjoyable second book in the Barleybridge series. The descriptions of the hardships of lambing and farming in Great Britain were quite interesting.

Shaw throws in some human drama which also helps make these books a quick read. It seemed more like a set of vignettes rather than a novel with a full plot rising action, etc but I liked it anyway.

Jul 25, Babs rated it liked it. Nice change of pace to read these Barleybridge novels. Nothing racy, no lewd language, and the characters enjoyable including the animals. If you want something light to read for a change or if that is your cup of tea, go for it!

Decent, I would say. Unnecessarily long mentions of irrelevant things here and there. Though an easy read. Mar 03, Reba rated it liked it. I liked this better than the first book of the series.
